Earl Mallinger is American Crystal Sugar's oldest shareholder and likely one of the nation's oldest farmers. He celebrated his 105th birthday on Aug. 14, 2022, and continues to farm about 1,000 acres near Oslo, Minnesota.
The demonization of “sugar” in general presents both challenges and opportunities for sugarbeet producers, Courtney Gaine, president and CEO of The Sugar Association, told the ASGA. While the challenge of overcoming consumer perceptions remains, the solution and opportunity may be as simple as getting people to see “real sugar” for what it really is — a plant-based substance with a proper place in a balanced diet.
United States Sugar Corp., a Clewiston, Florida, company that markets sugar cooperatively with Red River Valley sugarbeet growers, is seeking to purchase Imperial Sugar Co., including a major refinery in the Savannah, Georgia, area. The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday, Nov. 23, announced it is suing to block the purchase that could increase the market share of United Sugars Corp., the Edina, Minn.-based co-op marketing company, from its current 25% market share, to 32% to 34%.
Sugarbeet harvest plays a large role in the Red River Valley's agriculture industry. Due to the harvest being non-stop once the campaign begins, many local businesses extend their hours in an effort to rally behind sugarbeet producers.
