Dianna Schwenke of Nevis is the little girl pictured in this photo from the May 1944 "Woman's Home Companion" magazine. Her mother, Elise Duncan, wore her best dress for the occasion as she posed in the basement where the bounty of her victory garden was stored. The magazine will be on display, along with many other items, at the World War II program at First Lutheran in Akeley on Saturday, July 21.

Robert Wallick, Darlene’s husband, received the above telegram from his parents about the death of his eldest brother, John. “I got chills when I read the telegram,” said librarian Jodi Schultz. “At first, I thought this was the actual piece of paper that a mother held in her hand as she discovered that her worst fear had become reality.” The photo is of U.S. Army Corporal Arizona Perkins, John Wallick’s best friend.
