LETTER TO EDITOR: Thanks, Park Rapids, for bringing my puppy home
On Jan. 3, I lost my puppy, Jackson, for two very long nights. I recently made a move hours away from my family to work here. Jackson has made that distance lessen and brought endless joy with his puppy antics. When I lost him, I lost a part of my family.

LETTER TO EDITOR: Thanks for heartfelt support after devastating fire
We are heartbroken by the devastating fire that took place in the late afternoon on Jan. 2 that destroyed the beautiful Blueberry Pines Golf Course clubhouse. As we look at the heaps of ashes that remain, we thank God that no one was injured.

LETTER TO EDITOR: Hunters should accept responsibility
Kevin Weber's long letter about citations his son and nephew received for failure to validate site tags struck me as strange. First, he says his son never disputed the fact there were two violations. He even used the term "guilty."

LETTER TO EDITOR: In respectful disagreement, Trump's wall IS too expensive
Regarding the recent letter, "Trump's wall is not too expensive," at $5 billion dollars, the writer indicates that the wall is such a small portion of the annual federal budget, that it is well worth it. Is it well worth it to spend $5 billion on a wall that the U.S. taxpayers were...

LETTER TO EDITOR: Foxy's disagrees with county board decision
Foxy's Bar & Grill strives to be a good corporate citizen, follow guidelines set out by local government and give back to the community while simply trying to make a living. We are certainly disappointed and very much disagree with the county board's recent decision to punitively...

LETTER TO EDITOR: Menahga School District owes vacation pay
I would like to respond to the report which was given to the Menahga School Board by Superintendent Kevin Wellen on Dec. 10 regarding my conciliation court claim. I am not seeking, nor would I ever seek, anything that was not due me pursuant to my signed contract with the Menahga...

LETTER TO EDITOR: Trump's wall is not too expensive
December 21 is the deadline to fund the federal government or it will be "shutdown." Of course, a government as large as ours cannot truly shutdown completely, and despite attempts to gin-up fear about a shutdown, essential services will continue and benefit checks will continue to...

LETTER TO EDITOR: Informed voters wanted
These never-ending election cycles should produce some outstanding leaders, just as the progression of sports figures pass through their youth, high school, college/minor league sports programs. Our forefathers were overly optimistic by allowing just about anybody — with few...

LETTER TO EDITOR: Edelmans reflect on Northwoods connections
Old timers may remember the house fire on St. Patrick's Day in 1979 that took the lives of Eugene "Ike" and Anna Edelman. The Edelmans had homesteaded 240 acres four miles east of Itasca State Park, just inside Hubbard County and raised 17 children. Eugene worked the mines at Hibbing...

LETTER TO EDITOR: Replace worn American flags
I wonder why our U.S. flag has to be flown tattered and torn. We love our country, right? I'm a vet and have had to ask people why their flag needs to be in the shape it is when it's not hard to get a new one. If nothing else, replace our flag with Old Glory for the veterans that...

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the people of this community who donated 2,945 pounds of food and $200 to our local food shelf during the Stamp Out Hunger campaign. Thank you to the 20-some local U.S. Postal Service employees who distributed cards and bags and picked up the...

Letter to Editor: Looking for Osage descendants
In 1879, homesteading was opened, and in the early years of that period, several families found their way to the lakes, rivers, prairies and pine forests of what we now know as Osage, Minn. A descendant of one of those first settlers has made a gift to the Riverside Cemetery, enabling...

Letter to Editor: Animals need better legal safeguards
When will domestic animals get some of the legal safeguards that the environment and wildlife get in our great state of Minnesota? If our laws are not clear enough to bring tough consequences to those who are running a "rescue" on County Road 91 near Lake George in Hubbard County,...
