Perham/New York Mills defeats Panthers in battle of Section 8A girls tennis rivals

Perham/New York Mills solidified its spot as one of the top teams in the Section 8A field with a 7-0 victory over the Park Rapids girls tennis team at the Depot Courts on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The Yellowjackets, who defeated Roseau (5-2) and East Grand Forks (4-3) earlier in the season, improved to 3-0 against section opponents with their third 7-0 victory of the season. Perham/New York Mills (which lost to Pequot Lakes 5-2 and blanked Crosby-Ironton 7-0) also improved to 2-1 in Mid-State Conference dual meets.

Cassidy Bera lost in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles while Jada Renneberg and Mickey Clark lost in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles after both positions dropped the first set.

The Panthers fell to 1-5 in conference matches, 1-2 against section opponents and 6-9 overall. Park Rapids defeated Wadena-Deer Creek (5-2) while dropping matches to Pequot Lakes (7-0), Crosby-Ironton (4-3), Detroit Lakes (5-2) and Staples-Motley (5-2) in conference matches. The Panthers defeated W-DC and lost to Crookston (5-2) in the other section duals.

The Yellowjackets won the other five matches in straight sets to improve to 7-2 overall.

No. 3 doubles: Maggie Trites/Lavonne Lindberg, PNYM, over Natalie Harvey/Hannah Morgan 6-3, 6-2.
