Panthers face Otters to open section wrestling tournament
Park Rapids received the No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 Fergus Falls at 11 a.m. to open the Section 8AA wrestling tournament at Thief River Falls on Saturday (Feb. 16).
The winner between Park Rapids (2-16) and Fergus Falls (3-17) will meet No. 1 Perham (26-1) in a quarterfinal match at 12:30 p.m.
No. 7 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (11-10) meets No. 10 Sauk Centre/Melrose (2-16) in another first-round match at 11 with the winner facing No. 2 Detroit Lakes (25-3) in the quarterfinals at 12:30. The other quarterfinal matches pit No. 3 Thief River Falls (19-6) against No. 6 United Clay Becker (12-6) and No. 4 Pierz (17-9) against No. 5 Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus (18-9).
The semifinals are set for 2:30 with the section championship match following at 4:30.
Perham (No. 2), Detroit Lakes (No. 8), Pierz (No. 20) and Thief River Falls (No. 24) are listed in this week's state Class AA poll. Perham edged Detroit Lakes 32-27 in last year's section title match.
The Section 8A team tournament will also be held at Thief River Falls on Saturday (Feb. 16).
That tournament will open with No 8 Mahnomen/Waubun (2-15) facing No. 9 Red Lake County Central (2-10) at 11 a.m. with the winner facing No. 1 Frazee (8-7) in a quarterfinal match at 12:30.
In the other quarterfinal matches, No. 2 Badger-Greenbush-Middle River (14-9) faces No. 7 Roseau (6-11), No. 3 United North Central (12-7) faces No. 6 Fertile-Beltrami (3-8) and No. 4 Fosston/Bagley (11-6) faces No. 5 Crookston (11-4).
The semifinals will be held at 2:30 followed by the title match at 4:30.
Frazee (No. 7) and BGMR (No. 10) are rated in this week's state Class A poll. Frazee defeated BGMR 52-16 in last year's title match.
