Weaver, Morgan spark Panthers’ win at Frazee

A 21-10 run to end the game led the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 52-44 victory.

Tori Weaver and Hannah Morgan hit clutch shots in leading the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 52-44 win at Frazee on Friday, Jan. 10.

A jumper by Weaver and two inside baskets by Rilee Michaelson gave the Panthers a 6-2 lead before Frazee went on a 7-0 run for a 9-6 advantage. Two baskets by Paige Johnson, a layup by Michaelson, a 3-pointer and a layup off a steal by Weaver, a layup by Morgan, and a three-point play by Johnson gave Park Rapids a 23-16 lead. Three-pointers by Madison Starry and Anissa Antonsen helped the Hornets close the gap to 26-24 at the half.

A 3-pointer by Weaver and a layup by Michaelson kept the Panthers in front 31-30 before layups by Annika Reierson and Paige Ziegler put Frazee in front 34-31. Park Rapids responded by closing the game with a 21-10 run as Morgan began that spurt with a layup, a 3-pointer and a jumper for a 39-34 lead. A jumper by Olivia Davis and layups by Michaelson and Abby Morris made it 46-39 before a 3-pointer by Starry cut the gap to 46-44. Morris and Weaver hit two free throws apiece and Michaelson scored on a layup to seal the win.

Weaver’s 16 points and Michaelson’s double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds led the Panthers in this game between Section 8AA teams. Morgan and Johnson combined for 18 points while Morris dished out six assists and had three steals as Park Rapids overcame 29 turnovers by forcing 27 turnovers. Johnson had five steals and three assists as the Panthers improved to 3-5 in section games and 5-9 overall.

Ziegler (13) and Starry (12) scored in double figures for the Hornets, who made only 3 of 12 free throws in falling to 3-4 in the section and 8-5 overall.
