Warroad controls play in 15-0 win over Panthers

Mariah Gardner and Madison Oelkers scored five goals apiece as Warroad coasted to a 15-0 Section 8A victory over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Mariah Gardner and Madison Oelkers scored five goals apiece as Warroad coasted to a 15-0 Section 8A victory over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

The Warriors finished with a 75-12 advantage in shots on goal in handing Park Rapids its third shutout of the season and fourth loss in a row.

Goals by Oelkers at the 3:06 mark, Abigail Hardwick at the 6:10 mark and Joslynn Olson at the 10:38 mark gave Warroad a 3-0 lead before Gardner closed out the first period with goals at the 10:55, 15:53 and 16:04 marks. The Warriors held a 28-4 advantage in shots in the opening period.

Oelkers opened the second period by scoring at the 5:17 and 6:57 marks before Marlie Johnston scored at the 9:47 mark. Gardner's power-play goal at the 12:06 mark made it 10-0. The Warriors outshot Park Rapids 29-4 in that period.

After Hardwick scored at the 3:01 mark and Gardner scored a power-play goal at the 5:45 mark, Oelkers concluded the scoring with goals at the 7:13, 10:15 and 16:20 marks as the Warriors held an 18-4 advantage in shots in the final period.

Karlie Meeker had five assists and Gardner assisted on four goals as 12 different players recorded a point for the Warriors.

Goalies Julia Smith (40) and Klohie Mankie (20) combined for 60 saves as the Panthers fell to 2-5-1 against section teams and 8-13-1 overall. Warroad, which is rated No. 5 in the latest state Class A poll, improved to 5-0-2 in the section and 12-7-2 overall.
