Warriors kick off season at ‘Brave Like Gabe’ race

Aho leads UNC girls cross-country team in season opener

Anjalie Aho finished 24th overall in her varsity debut in leading the United North Central girls cross-country team to eighth place at the inaugural 12-team “Brave Like Gabe” Early Bird Invitational at Perham’s Arvig Park on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Aho completed the 5K course in 21 minutes, 56 seconds as the Warriors compiled 204 points. Gabby Hrdlicka (42nd overall in 23:38), Kate Hendrickson (50th in 24:17), Molly Hendrickson (51st in 24:18) and Deven Haverninen (52nd in 24:22) rounded out UNC’s team score.

Willmar captured the team title with 44 points while Pequot Lakes’ Calia Chaney led the 63-runner field in 19:36.

In the boys meet, UNC fielded an incomplete team with Christian Johnson (53rd in 20:28), Charlie Hodge (67th in 22:08), Sam Jackola (69th in 22:11) and Wesley Hodge (78th in 24:04) competing.

Perham’s Brandon O’Hara led the 80-runner boys field in 15:58 while Bemidji compiled 40 points to edge Perham for the team title.
