Wadena-Deer Creek relied on 42 kills and 11 ace serves for a 25-17, 24-26, 19-25, 25-20 win over the Park Rapids volleyball team at the Area High School gym on Monday, Oct. 11.
An ace serve by Marriyam Ejaz and kills by Quinn Hunter, Abby Felts and Chloe Tretbar gave the Panthers an 8-5 lead in Set 1. W-DC responded to take a 16-10 advantage before a kill and a block by Riley Pike, a kill by Felts, tips by Alison Scholz and Pike, and a kill by Tretbar made it 22-17. The Wolverines won the next three points to win the set.
Despite a pair of kills by Pike, a tip by Scholz and a kill by Kate Aukes, the Panthers trailed 15-8 to start Set 2. Tips by Pike and Hunter, a pair of kills apiece by Felts and Tretbar, and a kill by Pike helped Park Rapids tie the set at 24-24 before the Wolverines prevailed.
The Panthers claimed an 11-10 edge in Set 3 behind two kills and an ace serve by Pike, a block by Hunter, and kills by Felts and Aukes. After Kayla Kircher served three aces to give W-DC a 16-11 advantage, an ace serve by Ejaz, three straight kills by Hunter, a pair of blocks by Scholz, and an ace serve by Keely Peterson gave the Panthers a 20-18 lead. An ace serve by Pike and kills by Felts and Tretbar extended the match.
Two kills by Hunter, an ace serve by Pike and a tip by Felts gave the Panthers a 7-5 lead to start Set 4. The Wolverines built a 20-16 lead before kills by Felts and Pike made it 24-20. W-DC won the next point to seal the win and improve to 7-10 on the season.
Park Rapids lost all four matches at the Perham Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 9. The Panthers lost to Sauk Centre (25-8, 25-16), Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (28-26, 25-12) and Roseau (25-17, 25-20) in pool play before ending with a loss to Frazee (25-17, 25-11) in the first round of Bronze Division play.
The Panthers are now 3-14 on the season.
