Menahga’s 33 kills sparked a 3-0 Park Region Conference volleyball win over Verndale at Menahga on Thursday, Oct. 7.

Janie Tormanen (9), Erica Tormenan (7) and Maryn Pinoniemi (6) combined for 22 of those kills as the Braves rolled to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 victory.

Two kills apiece by Janie Tormanen and Erica Tormanen gave Menahga a 10-7 lead to start Set 1 before two kills by Pinoniemi along with a kill and an ace serve by Erica Tormanen made it 19-17. Two kills by Julia Besonen, a block by Janie Tormanen and an ace serve by Allie Pfeifer closed out the opening set.

A pair of kills by Pinoniemi and kills by Janie Tormanen, Pfeifer, Lela Peterson and Amanda Lake gave the Braves a 16-14 edge in Set 2. Erica Tormanen served a 6-0 run as kills by Erica Tormanen, Janie Tormanen, Peterson and Lake ended that set.

The Braves jumped out to a 7-1 lead in Set 3 as Janie Tormanen, Peterson and Pinoniemi had kills and Lake served an ace. Despite three kills by Janie Tormanen and kills by Pinoniemi, Meagan Holtz and Pfeifer, Menahga trailed 20-19. Pinoniemi ended the match by serving five straight points as Erica Tormanen contributed a pair of kills.

Lake set up 21 kills while Pfeifer (25), Pinoniemi (14), Peterson (10) and Erica Tormanen (9) combined for 58 digs as the Braves improved to 2-3 in the conference and 10-9 overall despite having 23 hitting errors.

Reagan Ludovissie had eight kills for the Pirates, who had 20 kills and 20 hitting errors in falling to 2-3 in conference matches and 7-11 overall. Henning and New York Mills top the Park Region standings with 5-0 records.

W-H-A sweeps

Katie Sagen’s 14 kills powered Walker-Hackensack-Akeley to a 3-0 win over Nevis in a key Section 5A and Northland Conference match at the Tiger Arena on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Kali Oelschlager added 11 kills as the Wolves posted a 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 victory.

Makenna Frazier and Addison Lindow had kills and Marley Mitchell served an ace as Nevis trailed 7-6 in Set 1. A pair of kills by Frazier and an ace serve by Mya Stacey kept the Tigers within 14-11 while two kills by Frazier and kills by Ava Isaacson and Stacey had Nevis within 24-22 before the Wolves closed out the first set.

A kill by Stacey tied Set 2 at 6-6 before W-H-A claimed a 20-12 lead. Kayli Bessler’s kill and block and a kill by Mitchell closed the gap to 23-16 before the Wolves ended that set.

The Wolves jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start Set 3 before four kills by Frazier and a kill and ace serve by Isaacson cut the deficit to 14-11. Frazier, Isaacson and Bessler had kills as W-H-A went on an 11-5 run to end the match.

Frazier had 11 kills and Stacey had 19 set assists to lead Nevis’ offense, which finished with 24 kills, 11 service errors and 17 hitting errors. Maggie Carrier (15), Frazier (10) and Isaacson (10) had double digits in digs as the Tigers fell to 6-1 in both section and conference matches and 17-5 overall. W-H-A, which had 38 kills and 17 hitting errors, improved to 8-0 against section opponents, 6-0 in conference matches and 18-4 overall.
