Strong serving, a balanced attack at the net and a scrappy defense led the Park Rapids volleyball team to a 3-2 Mid-State Conference victory at Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Sept. 16.
The Panthers served 11 aces, tallied 32 kills and kept the ball in play with 82 digs in rallying for a 13-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 15-10 victory.
Marriyam Ejaz served four aces and 10 points, Alison Scholz served three aces, Kate Aukes served two aces and 11 points, and Keely Peterson served two aces to lead Park Rapids’ offense. Seven different players had kills, led by Quinn Hunter’s eight, Riley Pike’s seven and Chloe Tretbar’s five. Pike (14) and Ejaz (8) combined for 22 set assists. The Panthers had only two service errors while committing 27 hitting errors.
Tretbar led the defense with four solo blocks while Hunter and Pike assisted on four blocks each with Abby Felts having three assisted blocks. Peterson (20), Ejaz (18), Pike (13), Aukes (11) and Tretbar (10) had double digits in digs as the Panthers improved to 2-0 in conference matches and 2-5 overall.
Grace Gunderson had 20 kills and Jalynn Gunderson had 18 kills for the Lakers, who fell to 0-2 in conference matches and 2-4 overall.
