Volleyball: Thief River Falls denies Menahga a trip to section title match

The Braves conclude the season with a 15-11 record following 3-0 loss in the Section 8AA North final.

Thief River Falls took control late in all three sets to sweep Menahga in the Section 8AA North championship volleyball match at Fosston on Thursday, Nov. 4.

The Prowlers, the No. 2 seed in the North, had 30 kills and nine ace serves in the 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 victory over top-seeded Menahga.

In Set 1, TRF jumped out to an 11-6 lead before Lela Peterson pounded down two kills and served an ace to close the gap to 13-12. Kills by Maryn Pinoniemi and Janie Tormanen tied the set at 14-14 before kills by Tormanen and Allie Pfeifer kept the Braves within 18-16. TRF closed out the set with a 7-1 run.

Kills by Meagan Holtz and Erica Tormanen along with a kill and an ace serve by Peterson tied Set 2 at 5-5. Two kills by Janie Tormanen and a kill by Erica Tormanen tied the set at 8-8 before TRF claimed a 13-8 lead. Kills by Holtz, Pinoniemi and Janie Tormanen kept Menahga within 15-12 before the Prowlers pushed their advantage to 21-13. An ace serve by Janie Tormanen and a kill by Holtz closed the margin to 22-20 before TRF closed out that set.

Two kills by Michaela Skoog and kills by Janie Tormanen and Erica Tormanen led Menahga to a 7-7 tie to start Set 3. After an ace serve by Erica Tormanen and a kill by Pinoniemi tied the set at 11-11, the Braves took a 15-13 lead behind two kills by Peterson, a kill by Janie Tormanen and an ace serve by Allie Pfeifer. Two kills by Janie Tormanen and a kill by Erica Tormanen gave Menahga a 22-18 advantage before the Prowlers went on a 7-0 run to end the match.

Janie Tormanen had 10 kills while Pinoniemi and Amanda Lake had 11 set assists each. Erica Tormanen (13), Pfeifer (11) and Pinoniemi (11) combined for 35 digs as the Braves ended the season with a 15-11 record.

Mattea Erickson’s 15 kills along with Giselle Cole’s nine kills and four blocks led TRF. Josie Johnson served four aces and Carlie Rogalla served three aces with Johnson tallying 24 set assists. Kendal Martell led the way with 15 digs as the Prowlers improved to 14-11.

Menahga served five aces with 10 service errors while pounding down 29 kills with 25 hitting errors. The Prowlers had five service errors and 16 hitting errors in the match.

In the Section 8AA South championship match, No. 2 Hawley defeated No. 1 Barnesville 16-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-15, 15-2. Hawley defeated Thief River Falls 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 in the Section 8AA title match.
