Undefeated in the pool

Sparked by five 1-2 finishes and five other winning efforts, the Park Rapids boys swimming and diving team remained undefeated in dual meets with a 110-75 Mid-State Conference victory over Detroit Lakes Tuesday night at the Area High School pool.

Sparked by five 1-2 finishes and five other winning efforts, the Park Rapids boys swimming and diving team remained undefeated in dual meets with a 110-75 Mid-State Conference victory over Detroit Lakes Tuesday night at the Area High School pool.

Casimir Simonson, Kaleb Carlson, Spencer Fritze and Sam Eystad opened the meet with a winning time of 1:51.01 in the 200-yard medley relay.

Matthew Benson won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.81 and Zach Behrens followed in 2:02.72 before the Panthers built a 31-15 lead with a 1-2 showing in the 200 individual medley behind Simonson's winning time of 2:17.67 and Marcus Benson's runner-up 2:20.66.

Eystad led the field in the 50 freestyle in 24.76 and Fritze took second in diving with 242.20 points as Park Rapids led 45-32. Fritze broke his previous school record of 262.15 points with 267.15 points last week in a dual against Perham.

Behrens won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.92 and Eystad took second in the 100 freestyle in 55.91 as the Panthers maintained a 60-49 advantage.

The Panthers took control by winning the final five events, including a trio of 1-2 showings.

Matthew Benson clocked a 5:24.65 and Marcus Benson followed in 5:36.06 in the 500 freestyle before joining Jack Bateman and Behrens for a winning time of 1:40.23 in the 200 freestyle relay. That pushed the lead to 79-60.

Simonson's winning time of 59.30 and Thomas Williams' runner-up 1:04.55 in the 100 backstroke was followed by a 1-2 finish by Fritze (in 1:08.13) and Carlson (in 1:10.57) in the 100 breaststroke to make it 102-69.

Matthew Benson, Behrens, Simonson and Fritze ended the meet with a winning time of 3:44.10 in the 400 freestyle relay as the Panthers improved to 4-0 in dual meets.

"We swam well," said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze. "We've been battling sickness and we were missing some guys, so it was next man up and they stepped up. Everyone raced very well."
