UNC's Hendrickson, Meech capture conference titles

Ethan Hendrickson and Dakota Meech were crowned champions at the Park Region Conference wrestling tournament.

Ethan Hendrickson and Dakota Meech captured individual titles for the United North Central wrestling team at the Park Region Conference tournament at Long Prairie on Feb. 1.

Hendrickson received a first-round bye before posting a 17-2 technical fall win over Ottertail Central’s Cody Jacobs in 2:49 in the semifinals of the 113-pound bracket. Hendrickson defeated Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie’s Deagen Captain 5-0 in the championship match.

Meech opened the 160-pound bracket by pinning New York Mills’ Cody Barthel in 3:57 in the quarterfinals and defeating Ottertail Central’s Nik Gardin 3-1 in the semifinals. Meech won the title when Royalton-Upsala’s Gabe Gorecki had to forfeit by injury default.

Two other UNC wrestlers also reached the finals. Eion Ness dropped an 8-1 decision to West Central Area’s Jordan Lohse in the title match at 152 while Vince Dailey dropped a 4-2 decision to West Central Area’s Nathaniel Kisgen in the final at 170.

Also placing for the Warriors were Aaron Lake (fourth at 106), Hunter Skaro (fourth at 126), Joel Isaacson (sixth at 145) and Torrey Carlson (fourth at 182).

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville, the top-rated team in the latest Class A poll, won the conference title with 221 points. West Central Area was second with 156 points while Ottertail Central (150), Royalton-Upsala (138) and BHVPP (136) followed. UNC finished sixth with 127.50 points while New York Mills (91), Wadena-Deer Creek (68) and Osakis (35) rounded out the nine-team standings.

UNC rolls by Osakis

The Warriors won the final nine matches in coasting to a 65-6 win over Osakis at Sebeka on Jan. 30.

Collin Olson at 145, Logan Torma at 170, Carlson at 182, Dailey at 195 and Justin Gonska at 285 ended the match with pins. Hendrickson posted a 23-8 technical fall win at 113 while Ness posted an 18-2 technical fall victory at 152. Lake added a 16-3 major decision at 106 while Hank Tellers posted a 4-1 minor decision at 138. Skaro at 126, Meech at 160 and Marcus Peterson at 220 received forfeits as the Warriors improved to 14-6.

Hendrickson was rated No. 2 at 106 and Ness was rated No. 10 at 152 in the latest state Class A poll. The Warriors were rated No. 21 in the Class A team rankings.
