Griffin Chase scored 19 points as the Nevis boys basketball team held off a late rally for a 49-47 win at Pequot Lakes last Saturday.
Michael Landquist added 10 points, four steals and three assists while Tom Wormley had six rebounds for the Tigers, who led 26-17 at the half. Chase also had five rebounds and three assists.
Zach Sjoblad scored 22 points to lead Pequot Lakes, which fell to 7-5 on the season.
"We got off to another good start and played extremely well defensively. We held them to 17 points and for us to be able to do that against a team like Pequot Lakes on the road really says something about how hard our guys worked," said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. "We really kind of got them out of rhythm with our 1-2-2 and they were never able to hit enough perimeter shots to make us change what we were doing. We missed some free throws down the stretch to allow them to have a shot to win it at the end, but again our defense did a nice job and they were unable to hit a shot to get the win at the buzzer."

Tigers defeat MI-B
Chase's 26 points and four steals led a balanced attack as the Tigers defeated Mountain Iron-Buhl 64-40 at the 4th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Classic at the University of Minnesota Duluth Monday.
Jack Landquist and Andrew Dudley also hit double figures with 13 points apiece for the Tigers, who outscored MI-B 36-13 in the second half to break open a close game. Jack Landquist had eight rebounds, Wormley hauled down six rebounds and Michael Landquist dished out six assists as Nevis improved to 11-1 on the season.
Jaylon Holmes scored 15 points to lead MI-B, which fell to 8-4.
"This game went back and forth for the first half as both teams tried to get familiar with one another. Both teams held leads until we went into the break up 28-27," said Kramer. "The second half was another story. Our defense really gave them trouble on the perimeter and they were unable to get the ball inside. For us offensively, we were able to adjust to their 1-3-1 zone and get a number of good looks, which we took advantage of by hitting seven 3s to put the game away. It was another great team effort. It was our fourth road game in seven days and I just wasn't sure how much the guys had left in the tank. But we really started the second half strong and just ran away with it."
