Tigers defeat Duluth East, go 1-3 at Pumpkin Classic

The Nevis volleyball team ended the Moorhead tournament with a win following losses to Roseville, Willmar and Big Lake.

Kia Heide’s 32 kills, 16 digs and 10 ace serves led the way as Nevis finished 1-3 in four matches at the Moorhead Pumpkin Classic on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 18-19).

The Tigers opened with losses to Roseville (25-18, 25-17) and Willmar (25-10, 25-11) in pool play on Oct. 18 before splitting matches on Oct. 19 by following a loss to Big Lake (27-25, 14-25, 15-9) with a win over Duluth East (25-15, 25-18).

Against Roseville, Heide had 11 kills, two ace serves and two solo blocks while Cora Umthun had 13 set assists and Addison Lindow had eight digs. The Tigers had 16 kills with 11 hitting errors.

Heide’s four kills, Makenna Frazier’s three kills and Sadie Thurner’s six digs led Nevis in the loss to Willmar. Nevis had only nine kills with 14 hitting errors in that match.

In the loss to Big Lake, Frazier (11) and Heide (9) combined for 20 kills with Umthun setting up 21 of the Tigers’ 26 kills. Nevis had 16 hitting errors. Frazier also had three ace serves, Heide served two aces and Lindow had nine digs.

Heide’s six ace serves and eight kills powered the Tigers past Duluth East. Maggie Carrier served three aces, Frazier had two solo blocks and Lindow had six digs as the Tigers made only eight hitting errors in that match.

Nevis closed out the regular season with an 11-15 record. Roseville ended the tournament with a 14-13 record, Willmar finished at 18-9, Big Lake ended at 5-21 and Duluth East fell to 4-23.
