Tigers, Braves fall in conference play

Pine River-Backus, Wadena-Deer Creek prevail in three sets

Jaime Johnson’s 14 kills led the Pine River-Backus volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Nevis in the Northland Conference opener for both teams at the Tiger Arena on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Olivia Adkins added eight kills while Emma Barchus and Claire Dahl had 11 digs each in PR-B’s 25-19, 25-16, 25-18 victory.

Kia Heide (11) and Makenna Frazier (10) combined for 21 kills for the host Tigers. Frazier served three aces and Cora Umthun had 21 set assists. Sadie Thurner (13) and Maggie Carrier (12) had double digits in digs as Nevis fell to 1-3 on the season. PR-B improved to 3-1.

Kennedy Gravelle’s 16 kills powered Wadena-Deer Creek to a 3-0 win over Menahga at Wadena in the Park Region Conference opener for both teams on Sept. 5.

Madison Carsten’s eight kills, Courtny Warren’s 15 digs, and Mackenzie’s Carsten’s 31 set assists and four ace serves were also key in the Wolverines’ 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 victory.

Janie Tormanen (7), Elly Hillukka (5) and Tara Hendrickson (4) combined for 16 kills while Annie Lake had 18 set assists for the Braves. Hillukka served three aces and Rena Pinoniemi had 12 digs as Menahga fell to 1-3 on the season. W-DC improved to 2-2.
