Strong second half sparks Panthers

     A 24-6 run in the second half led the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 63-45 victory over Waubun at the Area High School gym on Dec. 22.

     Two inside baskets by Gabie Johnson, jumpers by Hope Johnson and Bria Wolff, two inside baskets by Jaiden McCollum, and a layup off a steal and free throw by Katie Klein gave the Panthers a 15-4 lead with 10:46 to play in the first half.

     Waubun used two layups apiece by Kaitlyn Haugen and Megan Swedberg to spark a 12-4 run before a jumper by Gabie Johnson gave the Panthers a 21-18 lead at the half.

     The Panthers trailed 28-27 with 14:05 to play before taking the lead for good with a 24-6 run.

     Klein sparked that run with a trio of 3-pointers and three jumpers. Gabie Johnson had three inside baskets and Wolff hit a pair of jumpers as the Panthers led 51-34 with 5:52 to go.

     Two free throws by Wolff, a jumper by McCollum, another 3-pointer by Klein and a layup by Hope Johnson pushed the lead to 60-39 with 2:25 to play. Megan Olson capped Park Rapids’ scoring with a 3-pointer.

     Klein finished with 22 points and six steals while Gabie Johnson had 12 points. Wolff chipped in 10 points and four assists while Megan Grimes led the way with 15 rebounds while tallying four steals. Macky Warne and Wolff had six rebounds each as the Panthers improved to 4-2.

     Swedberg scored 22 points to lead Waubun, which fell to 6-3 on the season.
