Panthers sweep Cardinals, repeat as Mid-State champs

Kaisa Coborn went 6 for 9 with four extra-base hits, five runs scored and nine RBI in leading the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team to a Mid-State Conference sweep at Staples-Motley on Thursday, May 16.

Coborn went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and five RBI as the Panthers won the opener 17-2 in five innings and followed by going 2 for 4 with a double and a home run, two runs and four RBI in a 15-0 four-inning victory in the second game.

The sweep gave the Panthers a 10-0 record in the conference and 19-1 overall mark. Park Rapids captured the Mid-State title for the fourth year in a row after going 9-1 last season, 8-0 in 2017 and 7-1 in 2016. Detroit Lakes was the conference runner-up with an 8-2 record while Pequot Lakes (6-4), Aitkin (3-7), Crosby-Ironton (3-7) and Staples-Motley (0-10) followed.

In the opener, the Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning behind Kylee Pachel's two-run single, Katelyn Weaver's two-run double and Coborn's two-run single. Natalie Kinkel's double and Coborn's two-run double sparked a three-run third before another two-run double by Coborn made it 15-0 in the fourth. Abby Morris and Kinkel had RBI singles in the fifth.

Kinkel went 3 for 4 with three runs and Pachel drove in four runs to pace Park Rapids' 17-hit attack. Rilee Michaelson allowed two runs on two hits with five strikeouts over three innings for the win before Allison Offerdahl pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

An eight-run second inning sparked the Panthers to the sweep in the second game. A triple by Kinkel and RBI singles by Kylee Pachel and Shailyn Pachel produced a 3-0 lead in the first before Coborn's three-run homer, a triple by Kylee Pachel, an RBI single by Michaelson, and two-run singles by Morris and Kendra Coborn made it 11-0 in the second. Park Rapids scored twice in the third before Kaisa Coborn's RBI double in the fourth concluded the scoring as this game was called after four innings because of the 15-run rule.

Kylee Pachel and Michaelson both went 2 for 2 as the Panthers pounded out 10 hits. Michaelson and Offerdahl combined on a three-hitter as the Cardinals fell to 0-16 on the season.
