Goeden picks up 400th win as Panthers edge Moorhead
A dramatic walk-off win helped Marion Goeden reach a coaching milestone.
Ellie Ulvin scored on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team a 2-1 win over Moorhead at Park Rapids on Thursday, May 9. That victory gave Goeden her 400th career victory and kept the Panthers' undefeated record intact.
"When I think of what it took to get to this milestone, I think of all the amazing athletes I've worked with in my coaching career. I've been blessed to have some of the best in my program from the very beginning. I started when my children were quite young. It's not easy for a young mom to stay with coaching. I could only do this because of the support of my husband who took care of things at home so I could pursue my passion. Having my daughters in this program brings back many warm memories. Going to state (in 2000) when my oldest was a senior and a captain for the team is still one of the fondest memories I have," said Goeden, who has a 400-216 record in 28 years as the Panthers' head coach. "Anyone who knows coaching understands a coach cannot do this on their own. The support of my assistant coaches is the reason we are where we are. Ken Tretbar has been a volunteer for 19 seasons and has been a part of 286 of those wins. What he does with our pitchers is beyond what I can do. The commitment from my assistants and the lack of turnover from year to year certainly helps. Ken, Aarin Galzki and Ken Bynum have the same passion for this game as I do."
Park Rapids' Rilee Michaelson and Moorhead's Drew Syverson locked up in a pitchers' duel through the first six innings.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kendra Coborn walked, stole second and scored on Kylee Pachel's RBI single.
Moorhead tied it in the fourth when Maddie Spaeth led off with a single, advanced to third on two passed balls and scored on a grounder.
Park Rapids couldn't take advantage of Abby Morris' double in the second, Shailyn Pachel's double in the fourth, a walk to Morris and a bunt single by Ellie Ulvin in the fifth, and a single by Michaelson in the sixth.
However, the Panthers capitalized on a pair of hits in the seventh to score the winning run. Ulvin reached on a bunt single with one out and Natalie Kinkel followed with a single. Kaisa Coborn walked to load the bases with two outs before an error on Kylee Pachel's fly ball ended the game.
Michaelson, who retired the first nine batters, finished with a two-hitter with two walks and nine strikeouts. Ulvin went 2 for 3 to pace the Panthers' seven-hit attack. Moorhead fell to 5-11 on the season.
"Beating Moorhead is a sweet thing. I wouldn't have written it to end the way it did, but we will certainly take it," said Goeden. "Moorhead's pitcher did a great job on the mound. She played a smart game and did a good job of keeping us in check. Beating a AAAA school makes us feel quite proud."

Panthers top East Polk
East Polk hit four home runs, but the Panthers remained undefeated as a 13-hit attack sparked a 9-6 win at Fosston.
An RBI single by Kylee Pachel, a double by Michaelson and a two-run single by Shailyn Pachel gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead in the first. After Carlie Sander hit a two-run homer in the bottom of that inning, an RBI single by Kylee Pachel and an RBI double by Michaelson with two outs in the second made it 6-2.
East Polk used a two-run homer by Mckinsey Rosendahl and a solo blast by Jamie Carlin to cut the gap to 6-5 in the fifth before doubles by Shailyn Pachel and Morris, a single by Ulvin and an error gave the Panthers a 9-5 lead in the seventh.
Rosendahl's solo homer in the bottom of that inning concluded the scoring as East Polk fell to 2-2 against Section 8AA teams and 6-5-1 overall.
Kinkel (2 for 5), Kylee Pachel (2 for 3), Michaelson (2 for 4), Shailyn Pachel (2 for 4) and Morris (2 for 4) paced the Panthers' offense. Michaelson went the distance, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out five as the Panthers improved to 7-0 against section teams and 16-0 overall.
