Braves entering rebuilding season

The Menahga fastpitch softball team will be entering a rebuilding season as Lindsey White enters her first full season as head coach.

Leading the Braves this spring will be seniors Jamie Erno (pitcher), Madi Marjamaa (catcher) and Alyssa Peterson (outfielder); juniors Jessica Pietila (infielder) and Rena Pinoniemi (outfielder); sophomores Jadeyn Dissmore (infielder) and Rachel Marjamaa (pitcher); freshmen Amanda Lake (infielder), Allie Pfeifer (catcher), Lela Peterson (outfielder) and Maryn Pinoniemi (infielder); and seventh grader Alli Anderson (infielder).

Last season, the Braves finished sixth in the Park Region Conference standings with a 5-9 record. New York Mills went 14-0 to capture the conference title and capped off a 27-1 season by winning the state Class A title. Pillager was second in the conference standings at 10-4 while Sebeka went 9-5 and Wadena-Deer Creek tied Bertha-Heiwtt/Verndale at 7-7. Parkers Prairie (4-10) and Ottertail Central (0-14) rounded out the Park Region standings.

The Braves received the No. 7 seed in the West for the Section 5A playoffs and were eliminated with a 5-4 loss to No. 2 Sebeka to end the season with a 6-12 overall record. Sebeka defeated Pine River-Backus 7-6 in the section title game to advance to state.

White, who saw her team open this season with losses to Sebeka (15-0) on April 4 and to New York Mills (16-0 and 14-1) on April 9, is looking for her team to improve as the season progresses.

"We are a young team looking to make improvements every game. The girls are coachable and willing to work to improve. The keys to meeting our expectations will be to work together as a team and have our older girls helping our younger girls by being encouraging and positive," said White, who will be assisted by Bob White and Logan Redetzke. "With a young team and girls playing in some positions that are new to them, it will be a rebuilding year, especially considering two of our conference teams were at the state tournament last year."
