Scoring spurts spark Lakers past Panthers

Detroit Lakes maintained first place in the Mid-State Conference standings with a 73-27 win over the Park Rapids boys basketball team.

Detroit Lakes opened the game with an 11-0 run, closed the first half with a 13-0 run and ended the game with a 12-0 run in coasting to a 73-27 Mid-State Conference win over the Park Rapids boys basketball team at Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Feb. 13.

James Hartig hit a jumper and Kaiden Walsh hit a 3-pointer as the Panthers trailed 17-6. Two free throws by Walsh and another basket by Hartig made it 24-10 before Detroit Lakes carried a 37-10 lead into the break.

The Lakers led 41-10 before Walsh hit a 3-pointer and Kolby Brandt and Shawn Ohm followed with baskets as Park Rapids trailed 45-17. A 3-pointer by Noah Morris and baskets by Nick Michaelson, Mason Yliniemi and Noah Larson led the Panthers, who trailed 61-27 before Detroit Lakes’ reserves scored the game’s final 12 points.

Max Gunderson scored 18 points as 11 different players entered the scoring column for the Lakers, who remained in first place in the conference standings with an 8-1 record. Pequot Lakes trails the Lakers with a 7-2 record with Aitkin (5-4), Crosby-Ironton (4-5) and Staples-Motley (2-7) following. Detroit Lakes improved to 10-12 overall.

Walsh’s 8 points led the Panthers, who fell to 1-8 in conference play and 2-20 overall. The Panthers lost to Detroit Lakes 72-61 on Jan. 21.
