Richards caps career in style

Nevis' Micah Richards capped off her high school gymnastics career in style by placing 25th on balance beam at Friday's state Class A gymnastics meet at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

Nevis' Micah Richards capped off her high school gymnastics career in style by placing 25th on balance beam at Friday's state Class A gymnastics meet at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

Richards made her state debut by receiving scores of 8.10, 8.05, 8.05 and 8.15 from the four judges. The high and low scores were thrown out for an 8.075 average.

That gave Richards 25th place out of the 32 state qualifiers. Perham's Kelsi Vomacka had the top score of 9.625. Rachel Behmer of Breck was second with a 9.55 and Katelyn Rittenour of Becker was third with a 9.45. Perham's Mickaela Eickschen was seventh with a 9.375 and Perham's Carly Peterson finished 28th with a 7.95.

Richards, a senior, was the first member of the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team to qualify for the state meet since 2002. Richards advanced to state by placing fourth at the Section 8A meet by tying her career high of 8.90. Vomacka won the section title with a 9.525 while Eickschen was second with a 9.00 and Peterson was third with an 8.975.
