Record-breaking night lifts Bemidji by Panthers

The Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis gymnastics team ended the regular season with a 144.85-122.15 loss.

Bemidji broke four school records in closing the regular season with a 144.85-122.15 victory over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis gymnastics team at the Bemidji Gym Bin on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Bemidji broke the previous school record of 144.10 for team score and set new records on floor exercise (37.35) and balance beam (36.90). Tatum Offerdahl also set a school record for all-around score with a 37.20. Bemidji added scores of 36.55 in vault and 34.05 on uneven parallel bars.

Halle Landstrom posted the Panthers’ top scores in three events with an 8.60 on beam, an 8.40 in floor and a 7.65 on bars. Abby Kirlin received an 8.80 in vault for Park Rapids’ other top mark. Landstrom added an 8.75 in vault to place third in all-around with a 33.40. Morgan Koppelman followed with a 31.05 all-around score.

Following Kirlin and Landstrom in vault were Koppelman with an 8.60 and Emma Berghuis with an 8.30 for a 34.45 team score.

Koppelman’s 7.85, Erica Johnson’s 7.40 and Shailyn Hayes’ 7.20 rounded out Park Rapids’ 30.85 team score on floor.

The Panthers received a 29.65 on beam with Koppelman’s 7.40, Hayes’ 6.90 and Johnson’s 6.75 completing the team score.

On bars, Koppelman’s 7.20, Johnson’s 6.75 and Rachel Ulvin’s 5.60 followed Landstrom for a 27.20 team score.

Park Rapids ended the regular season with a 2-5 record in dual meets.

Bemidji won the junior varsity meet by a 126.25-97.25 margin. Posting the Panthers’ top scores were Lexi Graff (8.30) and Natalie Berghuis (8.30) in vault, Emma Berghuis (6.50) and Natalie Backmann (6.40) in floor, Backmann (5.80) and Emma Berghuis (5.00) on beam, and Laney Vrieze (5.10) and Natalie Berghuis (5.10) on bars.

The Panthers will compete against Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Little Falls, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville, Morris Area, Melrose and Perham at the eight-team Section 8A meet at Morris on Saturday, Feb. 15. The meet starts at 12:30 p.m. Melrose (No. 3 with a 144.45 average), Perham (No. 4 with a 143.88 average) and Detroit Lakes (No. 7 with a 142.54 average) were rated in the latest state Class A poll.
