ST. PAUL – Six area wrestlers are still alive at the state wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Park Rapids’ Robby Sherk opened the Section 8AA tournament on Friday (March 4) by pinning Watertown-Mayer’s Titan Friederichs in 2:26 before dropping an 8-1 decision to Richfield’s Charles Vanier in the quarterfinals of the 106-pound bracket. Sherk rebounded to pin South St. Paul’s Shane Schwab in 4:28 in the wrestlebacks.
Five of United North Central’s eight state qualifiers advanced to the second day of the Class A tournament.
Ethan Hendrickson advanced to the semifinals at 145 by posting a 12-4 major decision over Maple River’s Ethan Evenson and defeating Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City’s Brady Holien 7-1 in the quarterfinals.
Hank Tellers, Eion Ness and Torrey Carlson all won their first matches before losing in the quarterfinals.

Tellers opened the 152-pound bracket by pinning Eden Valley-Watkins’ Isaac Oritz in 2:51 before dropping a 10-0 major decision to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s Blaine Fischer in the quarterfinals. Tellers stayed alive with a 6-2 decision over Adrian’s Isaac Bullerman.
In the 160-pound bracket, Ness defeated Kimball’s Hank Meyer 8-0 and rebounded from a 3-1 loss to Medford’s Tate Hermes in the quarterfinals with a 7-0 win over Dover-Eyota’s Treyton Thesing in the wrestlebacks.
At 195, Carlson posted a 2-0 win over West Central’s Will Rustan, lost to New Richland’s Ralph Roesler 3-1 in overtime and defeated Dover-Eyota’s Tyler Mix 5-1.
Marcus Peterson opened with a 4-1 loss to Royalton/Upsala’s Jeremy Mugg, but received another match when Mugg defeated GMLOS’s Christian Luthe 8-3 in the quarterfinals. Peterson took advantage of that opportunity by pinning Luthe in 4:58.
Zach Hendrickson lost an 18-5 major decision to Tracy-Milroy’s Devin Carter in the first round at 120, but received another match when Carter defeated Goodhue’s Lucas Bortz 9-1 in the quarterfinals. Bortz eliminated Hendrickson with a pin at 3:36.
Conrad Koll at 106 and Aaron Lake at 126 were eliminated after one match.
Koll was pinned by Royalton/Upsala’s Tucker Simmons in 2:33 and was denied another match when Simmons lost an 8-0 decision to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s Trey Gunderson in the quarterfinals. Trinity School’s David Gregory posted a 17-1 technical fall win over Lake in 5:45 before being pinned by B-B-E’s Ryan Jensen in :42 in the quarterfinals as Lake was eliminated.
