ROSEAU – In the second match of the season, Roseau seemed to be in control after winning the first set before Park Rapids rallied to claim the match.
In the rematch in the Section 8AA volleyball quarterfinals, Park Rapids appeared to have the momentum after winning the first two sets before Roseau rallied to prevail 3-2 in this marathon match on Friday, Oct. 28.
The Rams pounded down 57 kills in a come-from-behind 21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-10 victory.
“We came into Roseau feeling confident, which is exactly how our team needed to feel entering a playoff game. We liked our odds of pulling an upset over the No. 1 seed, especially since we were able to take a win against them early in the season,” said Park Rapids head coach Ellie Riihiluoma. “Although we were confident, we also knew that this game needed to be taken seriously because both teams have improved over the course of the season. We expected it to be close and down to the wire, and it delivered.”
Park Rapids (which defeated Roseau 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 during the regular season) entered this match as the No. 4 seed in the North while Roseau was the No. 1 seed.

“Our girls played hard and put us in a good position early with their serving and smart plays. We adjusted our defense to their deep hits and fought for every point,” said Riihiluoma. “Roseau served and hit well late in the match, and remained confident. It definitely helps to be in your own gym where the home crowd can get behind you. While the loss in Roseau definitely stings, I hope when they look back on their season they are able to see all the good that went with it.”
