Volleyball: Park Rapids wins 3 matches at Walker tournament

The Panthers defeated Blackduck, Bertha-Hewitt and Royalton in the 14-team tournament.

WALKER – The Park Rapids volleyball team had a successful tournament by winning three of five matches at the 14-team Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Invitational on Sept. 17.

The Panthers defeated Blackduck (25-15, 25-14) and Bertha-Hewitt (25-21, 27-25), lost to South Ridge (19-25, 25-18, 15-9) and defeated Royalton (27-25, 25-21) before falling to Staples-Motley (12-25, 25-20, 15-13) in the fifth-place match.

Anna Yliniemi and Chloe Tretbar served four aces each while Riley Pike had seven kills in the win over Blackduck. Kilea Persons led the way with six digs as the Panthers served 14 aces and had 22 kills.

Pike’s three ace serves and seven kills, Abby Felts’ eight kills, and Tretbar’s 11 digs sparked the Panthers past Bertha-Hewitt. Park Rapids served eight aces and had 23 kills in that match.

In the loss to South Ridge, Pike served three aces and pounded down nine kills to go along with 13 set assists. Yliniemi led Park Rapids with 10 digs. The Panthers had 26 kills.

Tretbar’s seven kills, Halle Eischens’ seven digs and Pike’s four ace serves highlighted the win over Royalton. Park Rapids pounded down 26 kills in that match.

Eischens (13) and Yliniemi (12) combined for 25 digs in the loss to Staples-Motley. Pike served four aces and had eight kills while Erika Sellin tallied 14 set assists as the Panthers finished with 32 kills.

In the five matches, Pike had 36 kills and served 17 aces to go along with 59 set assists. Eischens and Yliniemi had 33 digs each while Viloria and Tretbar contributed eight blocks apiece.

“We had a great tournament day in Walker. Of course it felt good to walk away with three wins. It was a long day of volleyball and the girls stayed competitive and engaged throughout the whole thing,” said Park Rapids head coach Ellie Riihiluoma. “As a team, I see us improving on our defense, scrappiness and increasing the amount of aggressive attacks we send over the net.”

PARK RAPIDS – Pike served two aces and had six digs while Tretbar and Natalie Viloria had three kills each in the Panthers’ 25-12, 25-11, 25-6 Mid-State Conference loss to Pequot Lakes on Sept. 15.
