Volleyball: Nevis defeats Sebeka in Section 5A matchup

The Tigers improve to 6-0 against section opponents with a 3-0 sweep.

NEVIS – Kayli Bessler and Marley Mitchell combined for 24 kills as the Nevis volleyball team remained undefeated against Section 5A opponents with a 3-0 win over Sebeka at the Tiger Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Bessler had 13 kills and Mitchell added 11 kills in the Tigers’ 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 victory.

An ace serve by Mitchell, two kills apiece by Addison Lindow and Lyra Luebbert, and kills by Bessler and Ava Forbes gave Nevis a 15-8 lead to start Set 1. Two kills by Mitchell, tips by Bessler and Luebbert, and a kill by Lindow closed out that set.

Four kills by Bessler and an ace serve by Lindow sparked the Tigers to an 8-5 edge in Set 2 before a kill by Mitchell, a tip by Mya Stacey and an ace serve by Lindow made it 19-14. Two ace serves and a kill by Bessler, a pair of kills by Mitchell, and a kill by Sofia Anderson ended that set.

The Tigers claimed a 12-9 lead in Set 3 behind three kills by Bessler, two kills by Mitchell, kills by Lindow and Luebbert, and a tip by Stacey. After Sebeka rallied to take a 17-13 lead, two kills by Mitchell, a pair of tips by Lindow, and two ace serves by Mitchell during an 8-0 run closed out the match.

Stacey tallied 23 set assists and had 10 digs while Lindow (9) and Allee Forbes (7) combined for 16 digs as the Tigers improved to 6-0 in section matches and 15-3 overall. Nevis had 38 kills with 16 hitting errors and served seven aces with 12 serving errors while making only two errors on serve receive.

Sebeka fell to 0-4 against section teams and 5-6 overall.

Tigers split at Duluth East tournament

DULUTH – The Tigers split four matches at the Duluth East tournament on Sept. 24.

Nevis opened with a 25-22, 25-11 win over Duluth Denfeld; lost to Lake of the Woods 25-12, 23-25, 15-3; rallied to defeat Superior 22-25, 25-18, 15-9; and lost to Brainerd 22-25, 25-14, 16-14.

Bessler (9) and Mitchell (8) combined for 17 kills while Allee Forbes served three aces and had six digs against Denfeld.

Luebbert, Bessler and Mitchell had three kills each while Allee Forbes (13) and Bessler (10) led the way in digs in Nevis’ loss to LOW.

Bessler’s 12 kills, Anderson’s two ace serves, Allee Forbes’ 19 digs, and Stacey’s 19 set assists and nine digs sparked the Tigers past Superior.

Stacey had 18 set assists and 13 digs, Allee Forbes had 17 digs, and Bessler pounded down 10 kills against Brainerd.
