Volleyball: Menahga rallies to defeat Frazee

The Braves improve to 6-13 on the season following the 19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 victory.

FRAZEE – After dropping the first set, the Menahga volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 win over Frazee on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The Braves pounded down 41 kills and served 14 aces in the 19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 victory in this match between Section 8AA teams.

After Frazee won the opening set, the Braves tied the match behind Erica Tormanen’s three kills and ace serve, Janelle Hendrickson’s three ace serves, and Addie Pinoniemi’s kill and ace serve in Set 2.

In Set 3, Tormanen’s seven kills and two ace serves, Janelle Hendrickson’s three kills and ace serve, Leah Weaver’s three kills, and Malena Hendrickson’s two kills put the Braves in front.

Malena Hendrickson served two aces during an 8-0 in Set 4 to close out the match. Tormanen, Weaver and Pinoniemi had two kills each while Janelle Hendrickson contributed a kill, a block and an ace serve in the final set.

Tormanen had a double-double with 15 kills and 18 digs while serving four aces to lead Menahga’s offense. Janelle Hendrickson served five aces and had six kills with 13 digs while Weaver had nine kills and Pinoniemi tailed 27 set assists. Maddie Hendrickson and Pinoniemi had eight digs each as the Braves had 11 service errors, 24 hitting errors and nine errors on serve receive in the match.

The win lifted Menahga to 1-3 against section teams and 6-13 overall while the Hornets fell to 0-4 in section matches and 1-12 overall.

Braves go 2-2 at tournament

BARNESVILLE – The Braves finished fourth at the eight-team Barnesville tournament on Oct. 1.

Menahga defeated Win-E-Mac (25-20, 25-15), lost to Barnesville (25-20, 25-16) and defeated Battle Lake (25-23, 25-23) in pool play before losing to New York Mills (25-6, 25-14) in the third place match. Barnesville defeated Breckenridge in the championship match while Fertile-Beltrami defeated Battle Lake for fifth place.

In the win over Win-E-Mac, Weaver served three aces, Janelle Hendrickson had six kills and Erica Tormanen had eight digs. The Braves served seven aces with only one service error and had 17 kills with 12 hitting errors.

Weaver (3), Anna Pietila (3) and Janelle Hendrickson (2) combined to serve eight aces in the win over Battle Lake. Tormanen had seven kills, Janelle Hendrickson had eight digs and Pietila had 12 set assists as Menahga served nine aces with six service errors and pounded down 20 kills with 16 hitting errors to go along with only one error on serve receive.

Janelle Hendrickson served two aces and joined Tormanen with four kills in the loss to Barnesville. Tormanen also had eight digs and Pietila set up 10 kills as the Braves finished with 15 kills and 11 hitting errors and four ace serves with three service errors.

The Braves were limited to five kills and two ace serves in the loss to New York Mills. Kyah Jantz had five digs to lead Menahga, which had 15 hitting errors and 10 errors on serve receive.

Barnesville improved to 10-7 and New York Mills improved to 13-4 with their wins over the Braves while Win-E-Mac fell to 2-13 and Battle Lake dropped to 3-14.

Bertha-Hewitt sweeps Braves

BERTHA – Carissa Winscher’s 15 kills and 13 digs led Bertha-Hewitt to a 3-0 Park Region Conference win over the Braves on Sept. 29.

The Bears earned their first conference win of the season with the sweep by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-19.

Taija Pinoniemi’s three ace serves and seven kills along with Pietila’s 15 set assists led the Braves. Niina Pinoniemi and Janelle Hendrickson led the way with 11 digs each as Menahga had 25 kills with 19 hitting errors, served five aces with seven service errors, and had five errors on serve receive.

B-H improved to 1-3 against conference teams and 3-11 overall while the Braves fell to 1-3 in conference matches.
