Volleyball: Menahga posts 2-3 record at Walker tournament

The Braves' record falls to 3-8 with a loss to Staples-Motley.

WALKER – The Menahga volleyball team posted a 2-3 record at the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Invitational on Sept. 17.

Menahga opened with a 25-15, 25-15, win over Cass Lake-Bena before dropping matches to Fosston (25-13, 25-17) and Royalton (27-25, 25-20). After a 25-18, 22-25, 15-10 win over Blackduck, the Braves ended the tournament with a 25-15, 25-22 loss to Fertile-Beltrami.

Malena Hendrickson’s five ace serves, Maddie Hendrickson’s three ace serves and Janelle Hendrickson’s five digs led the Braves against CL-B. Leah Weaver and Taija Pinoniemi added five kills apiece with Anna Pietila having 11 set assists.

Erica Tormanen’s two aces and five kills and Janelle Hendrickson’s five kills and seven digs paced Menahga in the loss to Fosston.

Against Royalton, Weaver had seven kills, Tormanen recorded 13 digs and Janelle Hendrickson had 11 digs.

Pietila’s seven ace serves and 21 set assists along with Tormanen’s seven kills and eight digs led the way against Blackduck. Isabel Lake, Weaver and Janelle Hendrickson had six kills each while Maddie Hendrickson (9) and Janelle Hendrickson (7) combined for 16 digs.

Kayla Jantz served two aces, Tormanen had four kills and Janelle Hendrickson had five digs in the loss to Fertile-Beltrami.

Cardinals top Braves

STAPLES – Livi Lorber’s 13 kills, three ace serves and three blocks sparked Staples-Motley to a 3-1 win over the Braves on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Jade Storry added eight kills, Maggie Claussen had 22 digs, and Grace Jennissen had nine kills and three blocks in the Cardinals’ 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 25-10 victory.

Taija Pinoniemi (8), Tormanen (7) and Janelle Hendrickson (7) combined for 22 kills while Pietila served two aces and had 26 set assists. Tormanen (18), Janelle Hendrickson (13), Pietila (10) and Addie Pinoniemi (10) tallied double digits in digs as the Braves fell to 3-8 on the season. Menahga served four aces and had 32 kills in the match with eight service errors, nine errors on serve receive and 29 hitting errors.

The Cardinals, who served nine aces and had 37 kills and eight blocks, improved to 9-5.
