Volleyball: Bemidji sweeps Park Rapids

The Panthers fall to 1-2 on the season following the 25-21, 25-15, 25-18 loss.

PARK RAPIDS – Bemidji used late scoring spurts in the first two sets and a fast start in Set 3 to sweep Park Rapids in a volleyball match at the Area High School gym on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Mollie Runn’s 12 kills, Margie Anderson’s 25 set assists and Beth Bolte’s 10 digs led Bemidji to a 25-21, 25-15, 25-18 victory.

Bemidji jumped out to a 4-1 lead in Set 1 before three straight kills by Chloe Tretbar, a block by Natalie Viloria, kills by Halle Eischens, Riley Pike and Anna Yliniemi, and an ace serve by Pike gave the Panthers a 14-12 edge. Tips by Viloria and Eischens kept Park Rapids in front 16-13 before Bemidji’s Samantha Nistler served two aces to tie the set at 17-17. Runn served a pair of aces as Bemidji claimed a 21-17 advantage. An ace serve by Adeline Protratz helped Bemidji close out the opening set.

A pair of kills apiece by Abby Felts and Viloria along with a kill and three ace serves by Pike kept the Panthers within 16-14 in Set 2. Bemidji went on a 9-1 to win that set.

After Bemidji jumped out to a 12-2 lead in Set 3, two kills by Felts and kills by Pike and Eischens sliced the deficit to 13-7. An ace serve by Pike made it 19-11 before Bemidji claimed a 23-13 advantage. Kills by Felts and Tretbar made it 24-18 before Bemidji closed out the match.


The win lifted Bemidji to 1-1 on the season while the Panthers fell to 1-2.

At its board of directors meeting Thursday, the MSHSL approved a switch in the number of weight classes in wrestling and voted on a proposal to seed all eight teams in football state tournaments.
