Softball: Nevis ends regular season with a win

The Tigers defeated Lake of the Woods.

NEVIS – The Nevis fastpitch softball team concluded the regular season with a 15-8 victory over Lake of the Woods on May 20.

Molly Lindow (4 for 5, two runs, two RBI), Lyra Luebbert (2 for 4, including a double and a home run, two runs, three RBI), Peyton Offerdahl (3 for 5, two runs), Maggie Carrier (3 for 5, three runs, two RBI) and Annabelle Bolster (2 for 3, two runs) led Nevis’ offensive attack.

Carrier went the distance for the win, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits and seven walks with nine strikeouts over seven innings.

The win lifted Nevis’ record to 8-8 while LOW fell to 9-5.

Pine River-Backus sweeps

PINE RIVER – Pine River-Backus concluded the Upper Mississippi Conference schedule by sweeping a pair of games over the Tigers on May 19 and eliminated Nevis from the Section 5A playoffs with a 17-10 win on Monday, May 23.

In the regular season doubleheader, PR-B followed a 21-8 win in five innings the first game with a 15-12 victory in the second game.

In the opener, Bolster (2 for 4, three RBI) and Maddy Brakke (2 for 3) led the offense while Carrier allowed 13 runs (one earned) on nine hits and five walks over three innings for the loss. Offerdahl gave up eight runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks in two innings.

Carrier (2 for 3, two runs), Brakke (2 for 4) and Bolster (three runs) paced Nevis’ offense in the second game. Carrier took the loss, giving up 15 runs (five earned) on one hit and four walks with four strikeouts over four innings.

PR-B closed the conference schedule with a 7-3 record and an 8-7 overall mark while Nevis fell to 5-5 in conference games.

In the section playoff opener, PR-B used a 14-hit attack to defeat the Tigers.

Neveah Hollingsworth (3 for 4, two RBI), Lindow (2 for 3), Bolster (2 for 5), Offerdahl (1 for 3, two runs) and Luebbert (1 for 3, two runs) led Nevis’ offense. Carrier started and allowed three earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two in two innings before having to leave the game with two broken fingers sliding into second base. Offerdahl finished up, giving up 14 runs on 12 hits and two walks.

Tigers rout Bagley

BEMIDJI – Carrier scattered five hits and struck out 10 batters over five innings as the Tigers defeated Bagley 18-7 at Bemidji State University on May 17.

Carrier walked one and allowed only three earned runs while going 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Bolster went 2 for 3 with three runs and three RBI while Luebbert went 1 for 2 with three runs and three RBI to lead Nevis’ offense

Buchholz perfect

AITKIN – Megan Buchholz threw a perfect game, striking out eight, in leading Aitkin to a 14-0 win in five innings over the Tigers on May 16.

Offerdahl allowed 14 runs on eight hits and three walks in four innings for the loss.
