Softball: Menahga defeats Pelican Rapids, splits with New York Mills

Joie Koll and Molly Hendrickson hit home runs to lead the Braves' offense.


PELICAN RAPIDS – Leah Weaver threw a two-hitter and went 4 for 5 at the plate with three runs scored in leading the Menahga fastpitch softball team to a 9-1 win over Pelican Rapids on Friday, May 6.

Joie Koll’s RBI double and Kyah Jantz’s RBI single produced two runs in the first inning, Molly Hendrickson hit a two-run home run in the second, Journie Schoon’s two-run single sparked a three-run fourth, and Koll’s RBI double and Weaver’s RBI single concluded the scoring in the fifth.

Anna Pietila (2 for 3, two runs), Hendrickson (2 for 5), Koll (5 for 5, three runs), Schoon (2 for 4) and Elise Torola (2 for 4) led the Braves’ 19-hit attack. Weaver went the distance for the win, allowing one unearned run while striking out four as the Braves improved to 6-4.

Braves, New York Mills split

MENAHGA – The Braves followed a 7-3 loss with a 9-5 win to earn a Park Region Conference split with New York Mills on Thursday, May 5.

Hendrickson scored on an error in the third, Aili Anderson scored on Koll’s RBI single in the fifth and Torola scored on an error in the sixth to account for Menahga’s runs in the first game. Pietila went 3 for 5 as the Braves had nine hits. Koll took the loss after giving up only one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out eight.


In the second game, singles by Hendrickson, Weaver and Michaela Skoog led to two runs in the first; Pietila scored on Weaver’s sacrifice fly in the second; Koll’s three-run homer and Schoon’s RBI single highlighted a four-run fourth; and singles by Hendrickson and Weaver capped off the scoring in the fifth.

Hendrickson (3 for 5, three runs), Koll (2 for 3, two runs), Weaver (2 for 4) and Skoog (2 for 3) led Menahga’s 12-hit attack. Koll picked up the win by scattering 10 hits and allowing one earned run while striking out five.

The split gave Menahga a 5-2 record in the conference.
