ST. PAUL — Unseeded Cretin-Derham Hall outworked second-seeded Maple Grove, Edina outlasted feisty Moorhead, top-seed Minnetonka snuck by Hill-Murray and Andover cruised in the late-night finale in Minnesota Class AA state boys quarterfinal play on Thursday, March 9 at the Xcel Energy Center.
Cretin-Derham Hall 3, Maple Grove 1
"We had a great game plan in place," said CDH head coach Matt Funk after the 3-1 victory. "My heart skipped a beat when we found out we were playing Maple Grove, that's a really good hockey team that we played today."
The win is a big one for the Raiders after they were upset by Prior Lake last season in the quarterfinals at the 2022 state tournament. That was the game where Alex Bump scored five goals for the Lakers.
The Raiders took back the lead late in the second period as senior Holden Saumweber did a quick 360-spin with the puck and shot it directly into the goal.
Late in the third period, freshman Max Anderson tacked on an empty net tally for Cretin-Derham Hall.

Edina 7, Moorhead 6 (2OT)
The two teams combined for 13 goals, and the Spuds erased a three-goal third-period deficit in the final minute of regulation to force extra hockey before Edina's Charlie Sandven scored 2:02 into double overtime to seal a 7-6 Hornets win.
Sandven's shot, a long wrister from the right point, floated through traffic in front of the Spuds' net before finding the top right corner of the net.
Edina's top line of Bobby Cowan, Jackson Nevers and Ryan Flaherty combined for five goals and 11 points.
It was only the second time Moorhead has given up more than four goals this season. The other instance was a 7-2 Dec. 2 loss at Andover.
Minnetonka 4, Hill-Murray 3 (OT)
Unseeded Hill-Murray almost toppled No. 1 Minnetonka, but the Skippers found a way to come out on top with just 39 seconds left in a 4-3 Class AA quarterfinal victory on Thursday, March 9 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Minnesota Duluth commit John Stout scored on a shot from far out that beat netminder Jack Erickson and advanced his team to the semifinal round.

The Skippers have been the No. 1 team in the state in Class AA for most of the 2022-23 season.
Andover 5, Lakeville South 2
In the Section 7AA final, Andover and Duluth East were scoreless before the defending state champions potted five goals in the second period to clinch a trip to the state tournament.
The fourth-seeded Huskies spotted fifth-seeded Lakeville South a goal in Thursday's final Class AA quarterfinal before striking for three in just over five minutes in the middle frame on their way to an 5-2 win.
Leading scorer Gavyn Thoreson, a senior St. Cloud State commit and Mr. Hockey candidate, scored a hat trick and added an assist to finish the game with four points.
