PARK RAPIDS – Defending Mid-State Conference champion Pequot Lakes and defending Section 8A champion Crookston defeated the Park Rapids girls tennis team during a triangular meet at the Century School courts on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
Pequot Lakes, which went undefeated in conference dual meets last season, used four straight-set wins in singles for a 6-1 win over the Panthers in the first match. Crookston, which defeated Wadena-Deer Creek to win last year’s section title, also used a sweep in singles to spark a 5-2 win over Park Rapids in the final match. It was the first conference and section matches for the Panthers this season.
In the loss to Pequot Lakes, Emmy Goochey and Abby Runyan posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Eva Mumm and Kessa Eggert at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers’ lone win. Mickey Clark and Macy Goochey forced a third-set tiebreaker in a 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 10-3 loss to Kelbee Lampi and Aubrey Wiczek at No. 1 doubles.
The Patriots won the other five matches in straight sets.
Quinn Trotter topped Morgan Koppelman 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles; Allyson Yahn defeated Shailyn Hayes 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles; Payton Mudgett shut out Ella Ehler 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles; and Ellie Ouradnik posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kate Dravis at No. 4 singles. Calie Eggert and Nikki Crocker topped Nora Bolton and Rachel Ulvin 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Park Rapids avoided getting swept in the match against Crookston by prevailing in a pair of third-set tiebreakers.
Clark and Goochey recorded a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win over Emma Gunderson and Halle Bruggemann at No. 1 doubles while Dravis and Ulvin rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 win over Paige Abrahamson and Coral Brekken at No. 3 doubles.
The Pirates won the other five matches in straight sets.
Halle Winjum defeated Koppelman 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; Brekken Tull topped Hayes 6-2, 7-4 at No. 2 singles; Abigail Borowicz prevailed 6-0, 7-6 (11-9) over Ehler at No. 3 singles; and Isabelle Smith posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Destiny Haddy at No. 4 singles. Addie Fee and Kaylie Clauson defeated Emmy Goochey and Runyan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles as the Panthers fell to 3-3 in dual meets this season.
Crookston, which improved to 3-0 against section opponents, defeated Pequot Lakes 4-3 in the other match to improve to 4-0 on the season. The split left Pequot Lakes, which was making its conference debut, with a 7-6 record.
