PARK RAPIDS – Hallie Drossel broke the meet and pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke in leading the Melrose girls swimming and diving team to the title at the Park Rapids Invitational at the Area High School pool on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Drossel clocked a 1:06.42 to break the meet and pool record of 1:07.71 set by Staples-Motley’s Jaelin Beachy in 2013. That record-setting performance helped Melrose compile 639 points to top the four-team field. Park Rapids finished second with 608 points while Sauk Centre (456) and Perham/New York Mills (351) followed.

Addison Lauwagie played a role in both winning times for the host Panthers. Lauwagie won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.67 and led off Park Rapids’ winning 200 freestyle relay team, which clocked a 1:47.10. Avery Schueller, Mylee Edevold and Emma Vrieze rounded out that relay team.

Adding runner-up efforts for the Panthers were Vrieze in the 100 freestyle (58.21), Maya Deshayes in the 500 freestyle (5:57.24), and the 400 freestyle relay unit of Lauwagie, Lizzie Seifert, Deshayes and Vrieze (4:00.07).

After Allie Rowland finished fourth in diving with 196.90 points and to start this meet, Park Rapids opened the swimming events with a trio of 3-4 finishes.

Vrieze took third in 26.45 and Schueller was sixth in 27.29 in the 50 freestyle, Edevold was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.54, and Schueller was fourth in the 100 freestyle in 59.25.

Lizzie Seifert took fourth in the 500 freestyle in 6:12.31 before joining Himango, Bagstad and Deshayes on Park Rapids’ other 200 freestyle relay team that clocked a 1:56.61 for fourth place. The Panthers posted a 3-4-5-6 showing in the 100 breaststroke behind Lee (1:19.41), Himango (1:19.81), Gabi Shepersky (1:20.84) and Nora Cederstrom (1:20.84).

Voigt finished seventh in 1:11.88 to lead the Panthers in the 100 backstroke.

“I thought we swam really well against three good teams. Homecoming week is hard, but they handled themselves well,” said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze. “I told the girls not to compare their times to last year. Our workouts are way harder than last year and I told them that you’re not the same swimmer you were last year. Mentally we’re way ahead of where we were last year at this time. One thing I’m pleased about is we’re staying pretty consistent. The girls are tired, but we’re in a great spot.”
