Boys Swimming and Diving: Park Rapids captures Mid-State Conference title

The Panthers win six events to top the three-team field.

DETROIT LAKES – Winning six events and posting five runner-up finishes paved the way for a dominating performance by the Park Rapids boys swimming and diving team at the Mid-State Conference meet on Saturday, Feb. 12.

The Panthers captured the conference title with 459 points as Detroit Lakes was a distant second with 298 points and Perham/New York Mills placed third with 249 points.

Isaac Zinniel was a four-time conference champion for the Panthers by winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.50 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.94 and joining Jordan Odor, Cameron Runyan and Malachi Martin on the 200 medley relay that clocked a 1:49.95 and on the 200 freestyle relay that led the field in 1:38.33.

Also earning all-conference honors with winning efforts were Runyan in diving with 338.00 points and Martin with a 1:08.48 in the 100 butterfly.

Posting runner-up finishes to earn all-conference honorable mention honors for Park Rapids were Martin in the 50 freestyle (25.42), Odor in diving (321.10 points) and the 100 backstroke (57.24), Leo Kaufenberg in the 100 butterfly (1:15.06), and Runyan in the 100 freestyle (55.18).

Also earning all-conference honorable mention honors by placing third were Matthew Lichter in the 200 freestyle (2:14.15) and 500 freestyle (6:11.83) along with Pierce DeBlieck in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.69). The 400 freestyle relay unit of Kaufenberg, Lichter, Cameron Swanson and Carter Schiller also placed third in 4:07.53.

The Panthers will now prepare for the Section 8A meet Feb. 25-26 at Alexandria with hopes of qualifying swimmers and divers for the state Class A meet.

“I was very happy with our swims at Mid-State. The boys showed up to race and stayed focused throughout the meet,” said Park Rapids head coach Megan Rykhus. “We move on to taper and that’s all about resting up and focusing in on our section events.”

Team scores: Park Rapids 459, Detroit Lakes 298, Perham/New York Mills 249.
