WARROAD – Warroad followed a 16-0 run with a 9-0 run in building a 35-13 halftime lead in posting a 71-39 win over Menahga in the first round of the Section 8AA boys basketball tournament on Thursday, March 10.
Three-pointers by Ryan Tolkkinen and Alec Aho pulled the No. 12-seeded Braves to within 7-6 before Warroad claimed a 23-6 advantage. After layups by Connor Korvela and Nick Wurdock made it 23-10, the Warriors extended their lead to 32-10. After a jumper by Wurdock made it 32-13, Warroad carried a 23-point lead into the intermission.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Wurdock and Aho and a jumper by Tolkkinen cut the deficit to 43-24 before Warroad sealed the win by going on a 14-0 run for a 57-24 advantage. A three-point play and a jumper by Christian Johnson along with 3-pointers by Aho and Bodie Berttunen capped off the scoring for the Braves.
Aho’s 11 points and eight rebounds, Johnson’s seven rebounds and Wurdock’s six rebounds led the Braves, who ended the season with a 13-12 record.
Warroad, the No. 5 seed, used a balanced scoring attack by Cole Spenst (18), Kyle Kvarnlov (14), Dylan Fox (12) and Evan Grover (10) to improve to 22-5.
