Baseball: Park Rapids opens American Legion season with pair of losses

Wadena follows a 4-1 win in the first game with a 10-1 victory in the second game.

PARK RAPIDS – Park Rapids managed only seven hits in a pair of losses to Wadena to open the American Legion baseball season at the Area High School field on June 27.

The Legion was held to two hits in a 4-1 loss in the opener and had five hits in a 10-1 loss in the second game.

In the opener, Jaxson Lund singled and DJ Reichling walked to lead off the sixth inning. After a wild pitch, Sawyer Torkelson’s sacrifice fly provided Park Rapids’ lone run.

RBI singles by Connor Davis and Evan Lunde gave Wadena a 2-0 lead in the first while Brandon Wheeler’s double led to a run in the second. Davis singled and scored Wadena’s final run in the third.

Reichling’s single in the first was the only other hit for the Legion. Ethan Eischens walked in the first, Torkelson reached on an error in the fourth, and Anthony Tyge was hit by a pitch in the seventh to account for Park Rapids’ other baserunners.


Reichling started and took the loss for Park Rapids, allowing eight hits while striking out six over the first six innings. Eischens allowed a hit in the seventh.

Lund also scored Park Rapids’ lone run in the second game. Lund singled and scored on Torkelson’s double in the third.

Lunde’s two-run double highlighted a four-run first while a triple by Payton Rondestvedt sparked a two-run second. Doubles by Davis and Simon Kreklau led to two runs in the fourth while a two-run double by Davis capped off the scoring in the fifth.

Lund and Torkelson singled in the first and Matt Johanning had a single in the fourth for Park Rapids’ other hits. Aidan Hensel was hit by a pitch in the fourth for the Legion’s other baserunner.

Johanning started and took the loss, allowing six runs over the first two innings. Eischens allowed four runs over the final three innings.

Park Rapids will host New York Mills on Thursday, July 7, and will travel to Wadena on July 11.
