Baseball: Menahga sweeps doubleheader at Park Rapids

The Braves close out the regular season by following a 4-2 victory with an 8-3 win.

PARK RAPIDS – One streak ended and another streak continued for the Park Rapids baseball team.

The Panthers, who were shut out in their previous five games, snapped a 36-inning scoreless streak in the first game of a doubleheader against Menahga at the Area High School field on Thursday, May 26. However, Menahga followed a 4-2 win in the first game with an 8-3 victory in the second game to hand Park Rapids its sixth and seventh losses in a row in the final regular season games for both teams.

In the first game between these two Section 8AA teams, Menahga took advantage of three errors to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Liam Torola, Quincy Jantz and Henry Salmen reached on errors with Torola scoring on the third error and Jantz scoring on the back end of a double steal.

Park Rapids snapped its scoreless streak in the bottom of that inning to tie the game. Nick Michaelson led off with a single, advanced to second on Matt Johanning’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Noah Morris’ RBI single. After an error, Morris scored on Jaxson Lund’s RBI single.

The Braves added single runs in the next two innings to pull off the win.


Brayden Aho singled and scored on Ethan Hendrickson’s RBI single in the fourth while Nolan Haataja singled with two outs and scored on Salmen’s RBI single in the fifth.

Aho went 2 for 3 as Menahga managed only five hits off Park Rapids starter Isaiah Olson, who went the distance with three strikeouts. Haataja also pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. Lund and Michaelson both went 2 for 3 for the Panthers.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second game, the Panthers surrendered eight unanswered runs as Menahga completed the sweep.

Singles by Sawyer Torkelson, Mason Yliniemi and Noah Larson gave Park Rapids the early lead before the Braves scored twice in the third, three times in the fifth, once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to claim an 8-1 advantage.

In the third, a single by Shawn Hendrickson and a two-out walk to Aaron Pietila set up a two-run double by Haataja as the Braves led 2-1.

Torola was hit by a pitch and Pietila drew another two-out walk before Haataja lined another two-run double in the fifth. Haataja scored on an error to push the lead to 5-1.

In the sixth, Ethan Hendrickson singled and scored on an error to make it 6-1 while a single by Haataja, an RBI double by Salmen and a run-scoring grounder by Aho produced two runs in the seventh.

The Panthers concluded the scoring in the bottom of the inning on a double by Olson, a single by Lund, an error and a passed ball.

Menahga finished with 10 hits with Haataja going 3 for 4 with four RBI, Ivan Anderson going 2 for 4 and Ethan Hendrickson going 2 for 4. Jantz earned the win after giving up seven hits and one run in 5.1 innings. Pietila allowed two runs on two hits over the final 1.2 innings as the Braves improved to 6-2 against section opponents and 14-6 overall.

DJ Reichling took the loss, allowing seven earned runs with five strikeouts in a complete-game performance. Lund went 2 for 3, Yliniemi went 2 for 3 and Larson went 2 for 4 as the Panthers fell to 3-5 in section games and 8-12 overall.

Panthers' scoreless streak extended

PERHAM – Gage Germolus threw a six-hitter and struck out eight in leading Perham to a 10-0 six-inning victory over the Panthers on May 24.

The Panthers were shut out for the fifth straight game, extending their scoreless inning streak to 34.

Rian Solberg went 2 for 5 with a home run and five RBI and Austin Aanenson went 3 for 4 with three RBI to lead the offense for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 12-0 against Section 8AA opponents and 18-1 overall.

Morris singled in the first and fifth innings, Olson singled in the first and third, Yliniemi doubled in the second, and Johanning singled in the fifth for the Panthers’ six hits.

Morris started and took the loss.
