Baseball: Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale sends Nevis into losers' bracket

The Tigers top Sebeka 6-5 before falling to the Raiders 9-5 in the Section 5A tournament.

NEVIS – Two clutch hits by Aden Rach sent Nevis into the losers’ bracket of the Section 5A baseball tournament.

Rach belted a two-run home run in the second inning and followed with a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning in sparking Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale to a 9-5 win at Nevis on Friday, June 3.

Rach’s homer gave BHV a 3-0 lead before the Tigers tied the game at 3-3 by scoring once in the third and two times in the fourth. In the third, Tyler Lindow walked and scored on Eli Klimek’s sacrifice fly while walks to Ward Davis, Devan Lindow and Dawson McGee, a passed ball and Tyler Lindow’s RBI double tied the game in the fourth.

After the Raiders claimed a 5-3 lead in the fifth, Klimek reached on an error and scored on Davis’ RBI double in the bottom of that inning while Tyler Lindow singled with two outs and scored the tying run on Cain Mitchell’s single and an error in the sixth.

BHV used three one-out singles and a walk to score the go-ahead run before Rach’s double sealed the win.


Tyler Lindow (2 for 2, two runs) paced Nevis’ five-hit attack. Mitchell started and allowed five runs on six hits over five innings before Ward took the loss in relief after giving up four runs on six hits over the final two frames.

Nevis, the No. 1 seed in the East, fell to 16-2 while No. 3 BHV improved to 9-13 and advanced to play Hinkley-Finlayson (the No. 1 seed in the East with a 13-6 record) in the winners’ bracket. Nevis will host Braham (the No. 2 seed in the East) in an elimination game at 5 p.m. on Monday (June 6). The section tournament moves to Pierz for games on Tuesday (June 7) and will conclude with the championship game on Thursday, June 9.

Tigers top Trojans

NEVIS – The Tigers capitalized on four Sebeka errors in the fourth inning to score all their runs in a 6-5 win over Sebeka in a Section 5A West semifinal game on Thursday, June 2.

Eli Klimek and Ethan Klimek opened the fourth inning by reaching on errors. RBI singles by Davis and Austin Ahrendt and a two-run single by Devan Lindow followed to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. After Dawson McGee reached on an error, two more runs scored when Cain Mitchell reached on an error.

Sebeka scored three times in the sixth, but Tyler Lindow retired four of the final five batters to preserve the win.

The Tigers managed only three other baserunners to finish with four hits. Tyler Lindow allowed eight hits and four earned runs in a complete-game effort.
