Derek Porozinski’s layup with :01 showing gave the Park Rapids boys basketball team a 58-56 Mid-State Conference victory over Wadena-Deer Creek Friday night at the Area High School gym.

That victory prevented the Wolverines from picking up their first win of the season.

Three-pointers by Remington Hagan and Jordan McCollum, layups by Nick Lopez and McCollum, and baskets off rebounds by Porozinski and Hunter Jewison gave the Panthers a 21-13 lead with 9:21 to play in the first half.

Tanner Horn hit three 3-pointers to give W-DC a 24-23 lead at the 5:53 mark. That would prove to be the Wolverines’ only lead of the game.

Two jumpers by Jewison and a 3-pointer by Adam Herberg were offset by a three-point play by Horn as Park Rapids carried a 32-29 lead into the break.

Two jumpers by Dacotah Mittag, a 3-pointer by Konnor Stueve, and layups by Alex Redfield and Stueve pulled the Wolverines to within 52-48 with 3:07 to go before a layup by Lopez gave the Panthers a 54-48 advantage with 2:36 remaining.

Three-pointers by Stueve and Horn cut the gap to 56-54 with 42 seconds to play before Mittag hit a jumper to tie the game at 56-56 with :06 showing. McCollum took the inbounds pass and fed Porozinski for the game-winner as the Panthers avoided the upset.

McCollum finished with 11 points and Jewison added 10 points for the Panthers, who had nine players reach the scoring column. McCollum, Porozinski and Jewison grabbed five rebounds apiece while Massie dished out five assists. McCollum and Jewison led the way with two steals each as Park Rapids improved to 3-7 in the conference and 9-13 overall. The Panthers routed W-DC 90-58 earlier in the season.

Horn hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points while Mittag added 12 points for the Wolverines, who fell to 0-10 in the conference and 0-23 overall.
