Pelican Rapids defeats Panthers in season opener

The Vikings used an 11-0 run in the first half and a 17-0 run in the second half to spark an 84-47 victory.

Pelican Rapids used a balanced scoring attack to hand Park Rapids an 84-47 loss in the season opener for both girls basketball teams at the Area High School gym on Friday night (Nov. 22).

Pelican Rapids never trailed in the game after jumping out to a 6-0 lead and taking control with an 11-0 spurt midway through the first half and a 17-0 run early in the second half.

Greta Tollefson and Anna Stephenson scored 10 points apiece as the Vikings led 46-29 at the half. Rilee Michaelson, Hannah Morgan and Abby Morris hit 3-pointers for Park Rapids.

After Morris hit another 3-pointer to open the second half, Pelican Rapids went on a 17-0 run to claim a 63-32 lead with 12:51 to play.

Tollefson (20), Stephenson (16), Ryley Paulson (11) and Maddie Guler (10) scored in double figures for the Vikings, who made 21 of 26 free throws.

Morgan led the Panthers with a career high 14 points while Morris (8), Tori Weaver (6) and Katie Burlingame (6) combined for 20 points. Park Rapids made only 6 of 21 free throws in the loss.
