Paumen wins first women's title, ends Miller's five-year reign as club champ

A quick start sparked Sharon Paumen to her first women's club championship at Headwaters Golf Course Sunday.

After the first three holes of this two-day, 36-hole tournament, Paumen held a five-shot lead over the five-time champion. Paumen then matched Shelly Miller the rest of the way to claim the title.

A birdie on the No. 3 hole gave Paumen a quick five-shot lead. Paumen then carded pars on No. 7 and No. 8 for a 40 on the front side Saturday. Miller used pars on No. 4, No. 7 and No. 8 for a 44 while Bev Hepokoski used pars on No. 3 and No. 5 for a 45.

On the back side, Paumen used a par on No. 13 for a 45 and an 85 after Saturday's first 18 holes. Miller had a par on No. 16 for a 46 to finish with a 90. Pars on holes No. 13 and No. 15 led Hepokoski to a 47 and a first-day total of 92. Kim Rasmussen finished Saturday's round at 96.

Miller made a charge on the front side Sunday, using pars on No. 2, No. 3, No. 7 and No. 8 for a 41. Paumen carded pars on No. 4 and No. 8, but fell into a tie for the lead after carding a 46. Hepokoski opened Sunday's final 18 holes with three straight pars and added a par on No. 7 for a 44 while Rasmussen carded a 46.

A par on No. 11 gave Paumen a two-shot lead over Miller, who carded a par on No. 15 to stay within two shots. But Paumen sealed the win with a par on No. 17 to close with a 43 and a two-day total of 174. Miller finished with a 48 and two-day total of 179 while Hepokoski used pars on No. 11 and No. 17 for a 49 and two-day total of 185. A birdie on No. 11 and par on No. 13 led Rasmussen to a 48 on the back side and a two-day total of 190. Luann Hanson carded a 216 to round out the five women vying for the club title.

Suzanne Steele won her 12th women's senior title after defeating Paumen in a one-hole playoff. Both golfers shot 89s on Sunday. Paumen won the senior title last year.

Hepokoski carded a net 70 to win the First Flight while Kathie Kavolak and Penny Voss tied for first place in the Second Flight with net 76s.

1, Bev Hepokoski 93 (-23) net 70. 2 (tie), Kim Rasmussen 94 (-27) net 72 and Sharon Paumen 89 (-17) net 72.

WOMEN'S SECOND FLIGHT

1 (tie), Kathie Kavolak 106 (-30) net 76 and Penny Voss 103 (-27) net 76. 3, Judy Love 108 (-29) net 79.
