Park Rapids softball team defeats Pine River-Backus, gets shut out by D-G-F

The Panthers followed a 13-3 victory with an 8-0 loss.

Six extra-base hits powered the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team to a 13-3 five-inning victory over Pine River-Backus at the Area High School field on Thursday, May 13.

Shailyn Pachel belted out four doubles, Tori Weaver blasted a solo home run and Chloe Tretbar had a pair of two-run singles to spark the Panthers’ offense.

The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A bunt single by Ellie Ulvin and a walk to Weaver started the inning. Abby Morris reached on a bunt single, but Ulvin was thrown out trying to score on the play. Tretbar’s two-run single, a double by Pachel and a grounder by Mickey Clark produced the runs.

In the second, singles by Ulvin and Weaver and a walk to Morris loaded the bases. Tretbar followed with a two-run single, Pachel had an RBI double and Clark had a two-run single as Park Rapids led 8-0.

After PR-B scored three times in the third, the Panthers matched those runs in the fourth. Tretbar singled, Pachel doubled and Clark was hit by a pitch. Pachel stole home before Cassidy Bera’s two-run single provided an 11-3 advantage.

Park Rapids ended this game early via the 10-run rule in the fifth on Weaver’s solo homer and doubles by Morris and Pachel.

The Panthers belted out 15 hits with Ulvin (2 for 4), Weaver (2 for 2), Morris (2 for 3), Tretbar (3 for 4) and Pachel (4 for 4) leading the way. Tretbar went the distance, allowing only one earned run to improve to 4-3. The Tigers fell to 9-6.

DGF blanks Panthers

Mallory Leitner and Jena Bjelland combined on a two-hitter and struck out 10 batters while walking only two in leading Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton to an 8-0 Section 8AA win over the Panthers at the Area High School field on Friday, May 14.

Morris’ two-out double in the first and Pachel’s lead-off single in the second were the only hits for the Panthers, who were shut out for the first time this season. Ulvin had a lead-off walk in the first and Weaver walked with two outs in the third to account for Park Rapids’ other baserunners. Leitner and Bjelland retired the final 13 batters they faced.

Tretbar took the loss, allowing 11 hits and seven walks while striking out six. Park Rapids fell to 1-4 in section games and 6-7 overall.

Natalee Linman hit a solo home run in the second, Skylar Spessard had a two-run single in the third before the Rebels scored single runs in the fifth and sixth. Bjelland had an RBI double while three errors led to the final two runs in the seventh. The Rebels improved to 14-1 against section opponents and 16-1 overall. It was the fourth shutout for D-G-F, which was rated No. 5 in the latest state Class A poll.
