Panthers top Lakers 95-91 in final dual

Winning the final event enabled the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team to edge Detroit Lakes in the final dual meet of the season Thursday night at the Area High School pool.

Olivia Ulvin clocked a 1:14.96 in the 100-yard freestyle in Park Rapids’ 95-91 Mid-State Conference win over Detroit Lakes Thursday night.

     Winning the final event enabled the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team to edge Detroit Lakes in the final dual meet of the season Thursday night at the Area High School pool.

     This Mid-State Conference battle was close throughout before the Panthers used their eighth winning performances of the day in the final event for a 95-91 victory.

     Park Rapids jumped out to a 10-4 lead behind a winning time of 1:59.10 by Paige Fritze, Kayla Andersen, Tea Nyland and Lauren Rossman and a third-place time of 2:16.51 by Isabela Simonson, Maija Hovelsrud, Lydia Christensen and Caroline Drury in the 200-yard medley relay.

     Fritze won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.64, Nyland clocked a runner-up 2:25.60 in the 200 individual medley and Rossman (in 26.82) and Andersen (in 27.19) went 1-3 in the 50 freestyle as the Panthers maintained a 34-28 advantage.

     After the Lakers went 1-2-3 in diving (led by a school-record score of 257.40 points by Emma Disse) to take a 41-37 lead, Nyland won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.24 and Christensen was third in 1:17.64 as the Panthers cut the gap to 48-46.

     Rossman’s winning time of 58.43 and Trinah Szafranski’s third-place 1:02.87 in the 100 freestyle helped the Panthers tie the meet at 55-55 before Alyza Edevold’s winning time of 6:12.45 and Simonson’s third-place 6:20.19 in the 500 freestyle gave Park Rapids a 66-60 advantage.

     Andersen, Szafranski, Carly Waggoner and Edevold took runner-up honors in the 200 freestyle with a 1:52.45 before Fritze’s 1:06.47 and Christensen’s 1:14.18 led to a 2-3 showing in the 100 backstroke as the meet was tied at 78-78 tie with two events to go.

     The Panthers took an 87-85 lead behind Andersen’s winning time of 1:15.29 and Hovelsrud’s third-place 1:19.54 in the 100 breaststroke.

     Rossman, Nyland, Edevold and Fritze sealed the win by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.84.

     “This was a great meet for both teams,” said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze, whose team ended the dual season with a 7-1 record. “I love these kinds of meets. It challenges us as a team and as a coaching staff. These close meets are stressful, but you find out what your team is made of.”

     Detroit Lakes dominated the junior varsity meet, winning 95-40. Leading the Panthers with winning times were Jessica Kaseman, Chloe Voigt, Riley Kimball and Lizzie Bannerman in the 200 medley relay (2:38.75); and Olivia Ulvin, MacKenzie Hensel, Voigt and Bannerman in the 400 freestyle relay (5:16.92).
