Derek Porozinski drove in eight runs and pitched a complete game in leading the Park Rapids baseball team to a Mid-State Conference doubleheader sweep at Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday.

Porozinski went 3 for 4 with five RBI and threw a three-hitter as the Panthers won the opener 8-4.

A three-run homer by Porozinski sparked a five-run first inning to help complete the sweep with a 6-5 win in the second game in the Panthers’ conference debut.

In the first game, a double by Riley Massie and a single by Porozinski gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

A double by Ben Garcelon and singles by Chase Brand, Massie and Porozinski made it 4-1 in the second.

Singles by Jordan McCollum and Conner Byer led to another run in the third for a 5-1 lead before singles by Brand and Massie and a sacrifice fly by Porozinski made it 6-2 in the fourth.

After W-DC cut the gap to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth, a single by Brand, a double by Porozinski and a single by Jon Burlingame concluded the scoring in the sixth.

Brand went 3 for 3 with three runs and three stolen bases and Massie went 3 for 4 with two runs to pace the Panthers’ 13-hit attack. Seven errors led to four unearned runs as Porozinski walked four and struck out eight for the win.

After scoring five times in the first, the Panthers needed a run in the seventh to complete the sweep.

Walks to Brand and Massie set up a three-run homer by Porozinski. After an error and single by Jordan McCollum, Damion Hanke’s grounder, walks to Matt Bade and Kenny David, and a wild pitch gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead in the first.

W-DC scored single runs in the second and third, two runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to tie the game before Burlingame’s triple with two outs and McCollum’s single produced the winning run in the seventh.

McCollum went 4 for 4 and Burlingame went 2 for 4 as the Panthers finished with eight hits. Brand picked up the win, scattering 11 hits and allowing two earned runs in a complete-game effort.

W-DC fell to 0-4 in the conference and 0-5 overall.

Lakers sweep Panthers

Detroit Lakes rallied for the win in the first game and rolled to the win in the second game to sweep a conference doubleheader from the Panthers Friday in a make-up game that was postponed last Tuesday.

In the first game, Park Rapids jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Lakers rallied for a 6-5 win.

Detroit Lakes capitalized on nine Park Rapids errors for an 8-1 victory in the second game to complete the sweep.

In the opener, a double by McCollum and a single by Porozinski gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead in the first inning before singles by Burlingame and Hanke led to another run in the third for a 5-0 lead.

The Lakers used three errors to score three times in the bottom of the third before stringing together five hits to score the three winning runs in the sixth.

McCollum, Porozinski and Burlingame all went 2 for 4 to lead the Panthers’ eight-hit attack. McCollum took the loss in a complete-game effort.

Detroit Lakes took advantage of five errors to score four runs in the first, two errors to score twice in the fourth and another error to score a run in the fourth to complete the sweep.

Park Rapids avoided a shutout when Matt Bade singled and scored in the seventh.

Bade went 3 for 3 as the Panthers were held to only four hits in the game. Ben Garcelon started and took the loss.

The sweep lifted Detroit Lakes to 6-0 in the conference and 6-1 overall while the Panthers fell to 2-2 in the conference and 4-4 overall.
