Panthers soar to perfect score

Darryl Etter led the Park Rapids boys cross country team to a win at Pine River while United North Central swept titles at the Pillager triangular.

It was another perfect outing for the Park Rapids boys cross country team.

For the second time this season, the Panthers swept the top five spots in winning a triangular meet. This time the perfect team score of 15 points was tallied at the Pine River-Backus triangular at Pine River on Monday, Sept. 28. Park Rapids also scored 15 points to take first at the Crosby-Ironton triangular in the second meet of the season.

Darryl Etter set the pace by completing the 5K course with a winning time of 18:09. Right behind were Ephraim Bervig in 18:35, Ronaldo De La Cruz Gomez in 18:39, Eli Bervig in 18:48 and Nate Bervig in 19:01. Those five also paced the Panthers to a runner-up finish behind Nevis in the season opener at Pine River and the winning performance at Ruttger’s in the second meet of the season.

Rounding out Park Rapids’ varsity squad were Sam Warne (eighth in 19:52) and Skylar Hagen (ninth in 20:01). Pine River-Backus was second with 46 points while Crosby-Ironton had an incomplete team with only one runner.

In the girls meet, Crosby-Ironton claimed the team title with 23 points with Pine River-Backus following with 32 points. Park Rapids had an incomplete team with only two runners.

Natalia Lopez finished fifth in 23:12 and Aleka London was sixth in 23:27 for the Panthers. C-I’s Emily Miller led the pack with a winning 5K time of 21:37.

Warriors sweep

United North Central had five runners finish in the top seven spots in both races to sweep titles at the Pillager triangular at Madden’s on Gull Lake on Sept. 24.

Anjalie Aho led UNC’s pack of runners in the girls 5K race with a runner-up time of 20:35. Kaarin Lehto (third in 22:53), Kate Hendrickson (fourth in 23:26) and Joanna Lehto (fifth in 23:33) followed with Gabby Hrdlicka (seventh in 24:01) rounding out the Warriors’ team score of 21 points. Pillager was second with 48 points with Long Prairie-Grey Eagle taking third with 63 points.

Mattea Smith (10th in 25:09) and Alessandra Matson (15th in 26:01) completed UNC’s varsity lineup. LP-GE’s Caroline Kuehne led the field with a winning time of 20:04.

Andreas Aho was second in 19:17 and Connor Korvela was third in 19:36 in leading UNC to the boys team title with 22 points. Sam Jackola was fourth in 20:52, Christian Johnson finished sixth in 21:29 and Gauge Carstensen was seventh in 21:30 to round out the Warriors’ team score. Wesley Hodge (13th in 23:53) and Henry Hultberg (15th in 31:01) also ran for UNC.

LP-GE, led by Joe Liebsch’s winning time of 18:54, finished second with 33 points. Pillager fielded an incomplete team with only four runners.
