Staples-Motley will seek to return to the state Class A tournament as the Section 8A girls tennis tournament begins Thursday at Courts Plus in Fargo.
The section team tournament will begin Thursday with quarterfinal and semifinal matches. Park Rapids received the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 East Grand Forks at 7:30 a.m. The Panthers defeated EGF 5-2 during the regular season. No. 2 Pequot Lakes plays No. 7 Wadena-Deer Creek at 9 a.m. in another quarterfinal match.
In the other half of the bracket, No. 1 Staples-Motley will play either No. 8 Perham or No. 9 New York Mills at 11 a.m. while No. 4 Crookston will play No. 5 Roseau at 12:30 p.m.
The semifinals will be played at 1:30 and 2:30 with the championship match scheduled for Friday at 8:30 a.m.
Thursday will also mark the beginning of the Section 8A individual tournament with play-in matches. The first round and quarterfinal matches in singles and doubles will be played Friday with the semifinals, championship and any true-second matches being played Saturday.

For Park Rapids, Julia Smith is the No. 3 seed and Hope Johnson is the No. 4 seed in singles while Lindsey Girtz and Sarena Kinkel are the No. 5 seed while Morgan Knott and Mariena Dearstyne are the No. 11 seed in doubles. Staples-Motley’s Izabella Edin and Pequot Lakes’ Haley Wiebolt are the top seeds in singles while Crookston’s Leah Trostad and Ally Tiedemann and East Grand Forks’ Chessa Jones and Emma Dietrich are the top seeds in doubles.
The winner and runner-up in both singles and doubles advance to the state Class A tournament.
