Panthers finish third at invitational

Kyja Penning and Katherine Erickson turned in runner-up finishes to lead the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team to third place at Saturday's seven-team Park Rapids Invitational.

Kyja Penning and Katherine Erickson turned in runner-up finishes to lead the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team to third place at Saturday's seven-team Park Rapids Invitational.

Penning tallied 193.75 points to finish second in diving while Erickson clocked a runner-up 1:06.16 in the 100 backstroke to lead the Panthers, who finished with 341 points. Melrose won the team title with 565 points while Brainerd was second with 502 points.

Erickson and Penning joined Hannah Williams and Allycia Zinke on the 200 medley relay team that took second in 2:01.15.

Emily Creager placed fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:09.64 before Leah Meinert (fifth in 2:34.26) and Melissa Haas (eighth in 2:37.16) led Park Rapids in the 200 individual medley. Zinke had the Panthers' top time in the 50 freestyle by placing ninth in 27.92.

After Penning placed third in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.82, Creager (fourth in 59.75) and Zinke (sixth in 1:00.66) led the Panthers in the 100 freestyle.

Erickson (seventh in 6:01.09) and Meinert (10th in 6:08.14) led the Panthers in the 500 freestyle before Creager, Penning, Taylor Ondracek and Zinke clocked a 1:50.27 for third place in the 200 freestyle relay.

Ondracek finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.16 while Haas (fourth in 1:20.08) and Williams (eighth in 1:22.00) led the way in the 100 breaststroke.

Erickson, Meinert, Williams and Creager ended the meet by tying Detroit Lakes for third place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:03.75.

Todd Fritze's team carried a 3-0 record in dual meets into Tuesday's meet at Crookston. Park Rapids will host Perham in a Mid-State Conference dual Thursday night.

Team scores: Melrose 565, Brainerd 502, Park Rapids 341, Sauk Centre 293, Detroit Lakes 280, Perham/New York Mills 199, Fosston/Bagley 127.
